The Matriarch: Guardians

Book Reviews Comments Off on The Matriarch: Guardians

Just when you think you know what to expect from a sequel, Kevin A. Ranson completely shatters predictability with The Matriarch: Guardians. Although the first book,The Matriarch delivered a dark and intense sojourn, the sequel has managed to launch the story out of the atmosphere!

Newly transformed vampire Janiss Connelly, is quickly adjusting to her new role as executive administrator of Cedarcrest Sanctum. The elderly residents secretly rely on her blood to rejuvenate them, as does she with their blood. But this new “life” is ripe with complications. Janiss is literally haunted by her past, hunted by vengeful foes, and plagued by the guilt and nuances that come with being undead. Janiss must constantly look over her shoulder at every step. She bravely faces and embraces a whole new existence thrown upon her which was the furthest thing from her aspirations of becoming a school teacher.

The perfect pace and continuity of the different subplots fuse together seamlessly, and deepen the pull into each character’s motives. I found myself snickering at Janiss’s right-hand man Timothy, and his memorable quips. I was fully engaged and empathetic to Hector’s persistent support of his ill-fated family member. My pulse was furiously beating to the heated tension between Janiss and her ex-boyfriend’s brother. (That’s right! Nothing is taboo in this book!)

Allow yourself to become emotionally charged in this modern-day vampire thriller. It is so tangible and believable, that you might even second guess the intentions of every administrative professional that you put in charge of your loved ones. You might also start to desperately want to find the quality care of a qualified vampire. I now see the situation as being a Win/Win…just don’t ask too many questions.
