Doctor Who 50th Anniversary “Day of the Doctor” Review

Entertainment News Comments Off on Doctor Who 50th Anniversary “Day of the Doctor” Review

Like all Whovians, I have been waiting for this episode for well over a year.  We know the biggies of course (Tennant’s return, John Hurt is a mysterious incarnation of the Doctor, etc.), but there is oh-so-much more!

And I’m not going to tell you what it is.

That’s right good reader.  I am going to channel my inner River Song, give you a sly smile, and say, “Spoilers.”

Were this a normal episode of Doctor Who, we here at DarkMedia would give you a proper recap with all the plot highlights and key moments of the show.  However I cannot, in good conscience, give you an exact play-by-play recap of this episode.  You have to experience it for yourself, and come to find the secrets and surprises that shocked me when they were revealed.  I’m amazed that they kept these scenes under wraps!

A brief, spoiler free synopsis…the Doctor and Clara are summoned by the England’s highest authority to investigate a mystery in a museum where the Doctor is reminded of the darkest day of his life. There. That is all of the plot you are getting out of me.

What can I tell you about this episode?  It was beautiful, amazing, emotional, and so well put together.  For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel like Steven Moffat was going out of his way to send me on an emotional roller-coaster of pain and torment.  I can also say that certain story lines that were briefly touched on in prior episodes are elaborated upon.  I will leave you with this bit of advice: if you cried when Ten said “I don’t want to go” in End of Time, or if you broke down when Amy said her final goodbye to her Raggedy Man, you will need tissues handy.

Matt Smith and David Tennant each did a wonderful job of playing their respective Doctors, while also showing when you place them side by side, they are actually the same man with a different face.  And John Hurt…I can’t even explain his Doctor without giving away key plot points.  Just suffice it to say, as the “younger” version of the Doctor, it shows through.

Will your reaction to the 50th anniversary be as emotional as mine?  Perhaps, but then again, perhaps not.  You are probably not an over emotional Whovian fangirl who has had excited butterflies in her stomach for the past twelve months!  (If you are, contact me on Twitter if you need emotional support after watching!)  Everyone must experience this episode fresh and with their own eyes.  If you haven’t seen it yet, I envy you because I will never again be able to watch it with the same level of wonder, shock, surprise and amazement as I did the first time through.

Enjoy it.
