Banshee Recap: “The Rave”
Original Air Date (Cinemax): Friday January 18, 2013
Season 1 Episode 2
by Julianne Snow:
In this second episode, Lucas’ dreams are haunted by his memories of Carrie as he recalls their love affair, the last night they spent together and stealing $10 million worth of diamonds from Mr. Rabbit. It was Lucas who sacrificed himself so she could escape, landing himself in prison for 15 years.
In the morning, Lucas crashes an open house that Carrie is hosting, pulling her into the kitchen where he kisses her and tells her that he loves her. A small fight ensues and she tells him that if he really loved her, he’d leave town.
Next we meet Hanson, a drug dealer who works for Proctor, who scouts a location for a rave in an Amish barn. Deva’s, Carrie’s daughter and her friend Reed, the son of a state Senator, drive to Hanson’s house where he sells them drugs and invites them to the rave.
Lucas shows up for work at the Sheriff’s office to find an angry Brock, one of the deputy’s and the accepted next in line for the old Sheriff’s job, waiting for him. Proctor soon arrives and warns Lucas that the Moody boys will be after blood for him killing their brother, Cole. Proctor offers to take care of the problem, but Lucas shuts him down.
Later that night, the mourning Moody clan holds a wake for their brother at The Forge, the bar owned by Sugar Bates. Before a brawl can ensue, Sugar convinces a reluctant Lucas to leave, with some sandwiches in hand. Kat, Cole’s widow, spots Lucas eating their food while outside having a cigarette and confronts him. Cole’s brothers confront Lucas as well, guns drawn, but Sugar is able to defuse the situation. A young woman at the wake seduces a willing Lucas, but her identity is not revealed.
An Amish elder discovers news of the rave and informs the Police. While thanking the elder, Lucas is introduced to and recognizes the elder’s daughter. Rebecca is the young woman who seduced Lucas the previous night and he is stunned to see her dressed in Amish garb.
The Banshee Sheriff’s Department prepares to move in on the rave, where Hanson is selling a batch of tainted drugs to local teens. Effects of the bad batch are seen as Reed begins to seize as he is dancing with Deva. While the seizure is occurring, Lucas has punched his way into the barn and is seeking out the ringleader, Hanson. He sees Deva calling for help and is simultaneously noticed by Hanson. With the dealers on the run, and a teenager’s life in danger, Lucas decides to stay and help Reed until the paramedics arrive. As the rest of the Sheriff’s department bursts in, they pursue the dealers through the fields. Lucas takes out one of Hanson’s men, but Hanson escapes back to Proctor’s home.
Proctor is understandably upset with the mess Hanson has created. In an act of retribution, Proctor cuts off one of Hanson’s fingers with a steak knife then feeds it to his Rottweiler. Saying that “I don’t shit where I sleep”, Kai offers Hanson a 60 second head start, then releases his dog to chase him down who rips him apart.
The paramedics are unable to revive Reed, and Deva disintegrates. Lucas drives her home where she is met by her father at the door. The episode closes with Lucas and Carrie sharing a look from where she stands in one of the second floor windows.
There is a bonus scene after the credits which gives you a truly chilling look into the depravity of Proctor. If you can catch the episode on demand somewhere, make sure you stay tuned for it!
As I watched this episode, my mind was plagued with questions… Lucas was incarcerated for 15 years and Deva, Carrie’s daughter is 14 – is she Lucas’ daughter as well? What was Rebecca doing at the wake? I’m sure all of these things will be answered, but it never hurts to conjecture.
