“Go Big, or Go Extinct”
WonderCon 2013 Day 2 was all about the panels. I started the morning off by attending the Warner Bros./Legendary panel promoting the highly anticipated Pacific Rim. Director Guillermo Del Toro was present, and delighted convention attendees with an exclusively cut trailer for it’s WonderCon presentation. Del Toro informed the crowd before showing the clip, “The movie is now 85% complete, and the effects we are mixing, and doing the music, and so forth. You are basically seeing a trailer I cut for this event only.”
The trailer stunned the audience with the giant robot “jaegers”. Scenes of a jaeger being dragged over a rooftop by giant alien monster called “kaiju” with large wings. The crowd’s favorite scene was when one of the jaegers wields an oil-tanker like a baseball bat to knock down an alien. Del Toro was ecstatic with the cheers from the crowd and said, “That’s what you get when you have 25 story high mother (*&%@) kicking monster’s asses.” He also added that the head of the jaeger was actually a four story high structure which would move and roll when hit while filming. He piped, “Actors were exhausted by the end of the day, and I was sipping my fourth cappuccino.” Here is the official trailer for Pacific Rim, set to open in theatres July 12, 2013:
Del Toro told attendees about the graphic novel prequel called “Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero” based in the world of Pacific Rim, that is written by Travis Beacham, who also wrote the script for the movie. The cover art was revealed, and is set to hit stores on June 5, 2013.
You WILL Cringe
It was now time to brave the “Evil Dead” panel. Director Fede Alvarez, actor Robert Tapert, actor Lou Taylor Pucci, actress Jane Levy, actress Jessica Lucas, and the cult icon himself, Bruce Campbell, strolled onstage and took their seats. Right off the bat, Campbell told the crowd that this “Evil Dead” isn’t a sequel, but rather a remake…although he and Fede later confessed that would like to one day fuse the two franchises together in one story. Campbell said that they really wanted Alvarez to direct it because he was such a hardcore fan of the series, and as Bruce puts it, “(Alvarez) wouldn’t shut the ( #@*%) up about it.” Bruce was full of his charming snarky remarks, and at times, teased Levy about the filming torture she had to endure through shooting the film. Levy described the challenges of vomiting blood all over her co-star, Jessica Lucas’s face.
Although Sam Raimi was not present, he did create a special video for attendees, introducing the exclusive clip for WonderCon. Just before the lights dimmed, Bruce warned all of the underage kids in the arena to “get the hell out!”The clip was non-stop gory action. Once you think you’ve had enough carnage, the screen forces your gaze to last through more. I found myself covering my eyes up, but peeking through my fingers. The visually rich element of camera placement and top-notch make-up effects left nothing to the imagination. We were force fed the most disgusting horror, and I truly expect to hear news stories about people walking out of the theatre next week terrified, but happily satisfied when “Evil Dead” opens April 5, 2013.
