Ready for a whole new take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ever popular characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson? In the comic book series Watson and Holmes written by Karl Bollers, (from a story by Paul Mendoza and Brandon Perlow) everyone’s favorite fictional detective is an African-American living in NYC’s Harlem district. His path crosses with medical intern Jon Watson while investigating an assault victim that Watson is treating at the hospital. Watson insists on helping Holmes with the case after the victim informs them that his girlfriend has been kidnapped by his attackers and is in grave danger. The two set off on a quest to find the girl, which ultimately leads them down a darker road of conspiracy and criminal enterprise.
This highly stylized series offers a whole new dynamic of the super sleuth team. Modern-day Harlem is a perfect backdrop for the duo to meander through while searching out clues. Each page is filled with suspenseful action, and the legendary squabbling between Holmes and Watson is perfectly illustrated. Mrs. Hudson graces the pages as the owner of Hudson’s Vintage Books and Vinyl store on Baker Street. The lingo and dialogue blends perfectly in with the setting. Time is of the essence, and the ticking clock looms overhead as the reader becomes more immersed in the story. Each of the three issues that I read through had a climatic cliffhanger at the end that left me scrambling to read on to the next book. Brilliant illustration, coloring, and lettering added incredible depth and emotion to the storyline. This series is truly a refreshing new portrayal of the beloved tales about Sherlock Holmes. I would greatly recommend this series to anyone that enjoys a fast-paced action mystery. Check ’em all out at:
