True Blood #2 starts off with an investigation into Chow’s unfortunate demise. It is the second entry in the “Where Were You” arc, and now it’s time for Eric’s story. But before I begin, I need to take a moment to talk about the work that Michael Gaydos does. The art in this book is fantastic. Given that our vampire friends only come out at night, care must be taken with the balance between light and dark. Colorist Marcelo Maiolo does a great job balancing the contrast in the panels.
Sookie searches through Ginger’s memories to see who delivered the take-out box full of Chow’s remains. She sees the person in question…but he has the same tattoo that Godric had. But Godric is dead.
The haunted look in Eric’s eyes suggests that he knows who did it. The realization triggers a flashback to three days before the Great Revelation. (Cue Long-Haired Eric!) As it turns out, Godric has a brother who shares the same tattooed necklace. Nan Flanagan calls Eric in for questioning. A vampire named Remus is causing trouble for the Authority, and they need Eric to bring him under control. And since Eric hasn’t exactly been a big supporter of the American Vampire League, they’re calling in their trump card. “This planet is about to witness the biggest paradigm shift it’s seen since a giant rock fell on the dinosaurs,” Nan says. “It’s time to get the fuck on board.” Any inaction on Eric’s part will lead to consequences, so he has no choice but to pursue Remus and bring him to justice. If he refuses, Pam and Godric could be at risk.
This issue is a great opportunity to get a glimpse inside Eric’s world before the Great Revelation. The story is fast paced and it brings together all of the characters in a way that supports the storyline of the current True Blood season on HBO. Having each issue dedicated to one character allows for the writers to really delve into that character’s backstory in greater detail. I certainly look forward to the next issue to see who will be featured.
Up next, True Blood #3, coming in July 2012.
