The following contains spoilers for Season 3 of The Walking Dead
Almost exactly a month shy of the mid-season return of The Walking Dead, AMC has released brand new promotional materials for fans to chew on for a little while. We’ll return to the zombie apocalypse with episode 9, entitled “The Suicide King”. Previously, AMC released the following teasers about the episode: “Rick tries to rescue one of his group members. Woodbury is in disarray after a recent attack. New guests staying in the prison are a cause for concern.”
We now have a more complete picture of what to expect for the balance of the season, through a description released by AMC today:
“With his group in tatters, his sanity in question, and his own son questioning his every move, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) must somehow pull everyone together to face their greatest challenge — the Governor (David Morrissey). In order to survive, he must risk everything, including the group’s very humanity.”
To go along with the new description is a brand new poster featuring Rick and The Governor, promoting a showdown of… Biblical proportions?
In case you missed it, catch up on the mid-season finale of TWD, “Made to Suffer” with our coverage of the episode. We were left with brothers reunited, the Governor short an eye, and Rick seeming to teeter on the brink of madness after the death of Laurie. With this new description, and Rick’s sanity obviously still hanging in the balance, it should make for an interesting rivalry with the Governor — who’s consistently revealed himself to be ‘not all there’ as well (zombie heads anyone?).
Added to the excitement today is a bit of breaking news from The Hollywood Reporter on the departure of showrunner Glen Mazzara, citing The Walking Dead creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman as the reason Mazzara was let go, which is in contrast to the statements claiming it was a mutual decision:
Several insiders confirm that Kirkman, whose detailed graphic novels form the basis of the series, is “very proprietary,” as one puts it. One adds, “I believe Robert wants to maintain a certain amount of his control, and AMC needs Robert for the fan base.” But despite the vitriol, some sources involved withWalking Dead say Kirkman was one of several producers on the show who had issues with Mazzara and his vision.
This comes quickly on the heels of several colorful and critical statements made by Kurt Sutter (creator and showrunner of Sons of Anarchy on FX) on the handling of the show, the dismissal of Mazzara (who worked with Sutter on his hit show The Shield), and what he believes are potentially grim prospects for the future.
“The show has tremendous following, has legs,” Sutter said in a ten minute video released last week. “They’re going to plug somebody else, some pour soul, in there…my sense is they won’t even hire a show-runner. They’ll throw a s—load of executives at it and a poor sap on the writing staff…And that poor sap will ultimately be just expediting the notes and the vision of non-creative people, or at least non-creative TV people.”
Season 3 of The Walking Dead resumes on February 10th on AMC.
