In the seventh episode of The Following titled ‘Let Me Go’, Emma and Joey travel to a garage to meet Bo, a friend of Roderick’s. Joey asks a number of questions and Emma reassures him that everything will be okay. When Bo comes out to meet them, Joey asks to use the washroom and when he goes into the back to find it, he hears a woman crying behind a door. Sneaking into the room, he finds a woman in a cage and goes back out to tell Emma.
Meanwhile, back at the prison, Carroll’s lawyer is showing the Warden video of Ryan breaking Carroll’s fingers. She stops the tape and tells them she wants Carroll moved to another facility.
At Claire’s house, she relays her impressions of her captor, telling them that he appeared to have some sort of military code he was operating by. She also shares that Charlie was waiting on orders from Roderick who Ryan and Parker now believe is Carroll’s second in command.
When Joey comes to Emma to tell her about the girl, Bo overhears and tells Joey to mind his own business. Emma, confused and wary, asks him why he has a woman locked up in a cage. Bo tells her to mind her own business as well.
At the prison, the Warden notifies Parker that he’s granted Carroll’s request for a transfer to Georgia immediately. Ryan, angry at the misdirection asks Carroll about the transfer and about Roderick. Carroll tries to turn the table on Ryan, asking him if Claire has rejected him yet. Ryan is under the impression that he should supervise the transfer but the job falls to Parker. On his way out, Ryan asks Weston to look into the Warden.
At the garage, Emma asks Bo how he knows Roderick as Joey steals the keys to the cage. He goes into the room and unlocks the cage, freeing the woman whose name is Dana. She runs to a backdoor and implores that Joey go with her but he gets scared. Just as Dana makes her way out of the room, Bo notices that Joey is missing and deduces that he has gone to free the woman. When Bo enters the room, he yells at Joey, scaring him so he takes off into the garage. Bo gives chase and just as he places his hands on Joey, Emma pulls a gun on him. In that moment, Charlie comes into the garage and asks “What the hell is going on?” In the confusion and chase, Dana is recaptured.
At the detention center, they move Joe to the transport vehicle and it pulls out, with SUV escorts and a helicopter overhead. Weston and Ryan are discussing the information that he found out about the Warden, that his daughter hadn’t been seen in 2 days and had just been reported missing..
Charlie reveals to Emma that Dana is important and will ensure they make it home safe. When he asks about Paul and Jacob, Emma gets a little melancholy, telling him that she hasn’t heard from them. Charlie also reveals that Bo will not be coming with them when the time to leave comes.
Back at the prison, Ryan reviews footage from the prison loading bay that was found on Charlie’s computer. He compares it with the footage of Joe being loaded on the van and finds the same piece of litter blowing through the shot. Realizing that there has been a switch, Ryan calls Parker who makes them open the transport. Carroll is not inside. Once Parker relays the information back to Ryan, he and Weston rush out in search of the Warden. Stopping him from driving off the prison grounds, they force him to open his trunk, thinking Carroll is inside. When he is not, Ryan pressures him and the Warden reveals that Carroll left with his lawyer.
Carroll’s lawyer stops her car outside of a rundown building where she opens her trunk to let Carroll out. She hands him a garment bag and he changes his clothes. Once he is dressed, they pull back out into traffic and travel to another location. As the FBI try to determine their location, Olivia pulls to a stop outside an office building. Carroll instructs her to call Ryan and tell him “that I’m killing you and it’s all his fault” as Ryan pleads for her life.
The perspective shifts to Charlie as he tells Joey that his mom was supposed to be there, but he screwed up and the “bad guys” got her. When Joey asks what is really going on, Charlie asks him what he wants to know. Joey expresses concern for Dana and Charlie promises she’ll be okay.
Somewhere downtown, Joe walks into a crowded food court and spies the man he is looking for. Meeting him on one of the upper levels, they leave the public area and enter a hallway. Ryan and Weston arrive just in time to see them leave and give chase. When a guard spies Carroll and his companion in the hallway and is about to ask them what they are doing, a woman walks by and slices open the guard’s stomach. Ryan enters the hallway and chases them up the stairs. On the landing, he meets Carroll’s companion, David, who grabs his gun. They fight and in the commotion, Carroll is able to secure Ryan’s gun and points it at him. With time running out, Carroll taunts Ryan, telling him that he would miss too much if he killed him. When the blonde woman, Louise returns, she tells Carroll that it’s time to go. Joe and Louise go upstairs to the helicopter landing pad while David stays behind to hold the gun on Ryan. Ryan points out that David isn’t allowed to kill him and lunges for the gun, shooting David in the leg. He races up the stairs, but he can only shoot at the helicopter as it flies away.
At the garage, Charlie gets the call to leave and he goes to deal with Bo and Dana.
In the parking garage, Parker recaps everything that has occurred: the helicopter which was unregistered got away, the Warden’s crime and that they have David in custody. Ryan wants to interrogate him and Parker gives him five minutes. Ryan puts on a pair of surgical gloves and asks David about Joey, digging his hands into his leg wound in order to elicit information.
The next scene shows Ryan, Parker and a team finding the cages in the back of the garage. Bo is dead from a gunshot wound to the head in one of them while Dana is alive in the other. She tells them they took Joey.
The decision to put Claire into protective custody is made; Carroll is free and it’s not safe for her. As Joe and Louise arrive at a giant gated mansion, dozens of Joe’s followers exit to the house to greet him. Charlie and Emma are among them and when. Emma hugs Joe and she steps aside to reveal Joey standing among the crowd. The first moments between father and son are strained and nervous.
This is where the episode ends and the next one looks like the series is only going to get better!
