Supernatural Recap: “Remember the Titans”
Original Air Date (CW): Wednesday February 27, 2013
Season 8, Episode 16
The only thing worse than experiencing excruciating pain, is watching someone you love with all of your heart experience pain. You would give anything to either trade places with them, or find some way to end their suffering. In this episode of Supernatural, the Winchester brothers face a case that forces them to deal with the possibility that the quest they are on may lead to tragedy. The sacrifices heroes make are just a testimonial to their bravery.
Zombies???
Dean and Sam have their interests piqued when they read about a man who was hit by a car, guts spilled out all over the road, pronounced dead at the scene, but got up few hours later and walked away. They head over to this town to further investigate these claims. The state Trooper tells them he believes the guy was a zombie. A report of another dead body comes in and the Trooper recognizes it as being that of the guy he believes is a zombie. Sam and Dean head to the morgue to see the body. The man is dead. Torn apart. As they start to discuss if this is anything supernatural, the guy gets up and tries escaping. Of course they boys are able to stop him and proceed with questioning him. Shane reveals to them that for as long as he can remember, he has died every single day and then mysteriously comes back to life. It is pure torture. He has limited memory, only going back a few years. The guys have no choice but to believe him because he has passed all of their “tests”. Shane stays with the guys over night because and wakes up to some strange woman peering over him. A struggle takes place, and Sam and Dean are able to help Shane fend off this powerful woman. She vanishes into thin air. Shane suffers a heart attack and dies. Sam and Dean know they can’t do anything about this and just wait it out.
Cursed
The next day, a woman and a little boy come knocking on the motel room door. She tells them that she talked to the local police and that they had said that the mysterious dead guy was last seen with them. Hayley pleads with them to let her see Shane, and they oblige…purely because she knows him and his situation. There is also another thing; the little boy, Oliver…is Shane’s son, whom he has never met. Eventually Shane wakes up and is stunned to see Hayley. It has been over seven years. She breaks the news to him that quiet little Oliver is their son. Meanwhile, Sam has figured out that Shane is actually the proto-god, Prometheus. Story goes that Zeus was mad at man and took away fire. Prometheus went to the mountain to take fire and bring it back to the mortals, but when he was caught, Zeus punished him by having him eternally dying every single day of his immortal life. Just as this all sorta makes sense to them, Hayley brings in Oliver from outside. He is bleeding from the head, but she stops them from seeking emergency assistance. It is at this point that they all figure out that Oliver suffers from the same affliction as his dad.
Hey, Zeus!
The Winchesters take Hayley, Shane, and Oliver to the secret lair of the “Men of Letters”. Sam has access there to some records of how to summon Zeus. It is their belief that they must ask Zeus to break the curse…and if not, they will just take down Zeus. Sam and Shane head down to a local cemetery to dig up the bone of a Zeus worshipper, while Dean and Hayley shop for some fulgurite. After they gather all of the necessary items, they conjure Zeus. Zeus sorta resembles that “most interesting man in the world “beer guy. The guys have Zeus trapped within the protective circle, but are unable to convince him that he should break the curse. He then charms Hayley into thinking he will help Oliver, and so she lets him out. Zeus now takes full control of the situation when his daughter, Artemis arrives. This is that woman that was peering over Shane earlier. Artemis subdues Sam and Dean, but Sam gets into her head with talk about how she isn’t very worthy of her god-like status. He also makes some remarks about how Zeus has been torturing Prometheus for too long. Sam senses that Artemis secretly loves Prometheus. Artemis then changes her stance and heads back over to Zeus, only this time, her bow and arrow is aimed directly at him. She shoots him with her lethal arrow, but Zeus uses Prometheus as a shield. Prometheus acts quickly and stabs the arrow deep into his body so that it goes all the way through and into Zeus.
The pain and suffering is now over for Prometheus. This case is over for the Winchesters, but it stirs up some deep emotions within them. Sam can’t help but assume that the quest they are on will ultimately lead to his demise. Dean takes this to heart and while alone, he prays to Castiel to look over his brother.
Quotable Quotes:
Dean to Sam: “I gotta say, I am a little disappointed.”
Sam to Dean: “Yeah, cause you wanted to shoot zombies.”
Dean to Sam: “Damn straight I wanted to shoot some zombies!”
Sam to Shane: “All you do is die? What’s that supposed to mean?”
Shane to Sam: “Once a day, for as long as I can remember. After a few hours, I’m back.”
Dean to Shane: “What…you’re like a real-life Kenny?”
Sam to Dean: “What do we know of that has Jason Bourne fighting skills, dies a lot, and has a history with violent women?”
Dean to Sam: “I don’t know…You?”
Dean to Sam: “You promised to live a long, Clark Griswold life full of exams and colonoscopies, alright? You’re not welching on that deal. Not on my watch. If you die, it’s gonna be because of something normal.”
