Season 7, Episode 15
Without the wherewithal that Bobby had, Sam and Dean are unable to pinpoint any leads to the whereabouts of Dick Roman. They stumble upon a familiar case from the past that they took care of four years prior in Idaho. Four years may not be a long time to us, but to the Winchesters, it can amount to an eternity.
Codependency
Four years ago, a demon had ritualistically murdered a slew of women in Idaho while using the body of a man named Jeffrey. A Wiccan woman named Nora tipped off Sam and Dean to the location of Jeffrey, and Dean successfully exorcised the demon. Dean and Sam did not want to see Jeffrey land in prison for crimes committed while being possessed, so they dropped him off at a hospital while they covered up the crimes for him.
Flash forward to present day and Sam and Dean find themselves in the same small town in Idaho discussing with local police the details of the brutal ritualistic murders that match the murders from four years back. The police believe that the same serial killer that tore through their town years ago is on the loose again. Sam and Dean decide to visit Nora. She tells them that she thinks they should find Jeffrey. She points out that if the demon is back, it may want to possess Jeffrey again. The boys agree to check him out.
Jeffrey now lives in a local halfway house. It seems as though the past few years have been difficult, but he is now ready to take on the responsibility of adopting a dog from the animal shelter. Sam and Dean approach Jeffrey just after he adopts his new pet and take them back to their motel. They examine Jeffrey and see that he is clearly not possessed. Jeffrey shares with them how rough things have been for him. He now has a visible limp from the injuries he suffered during the exorcism. He also goes on to tell them that he became depressed and an alcoholic from dealing with the repercussions of going through the whole trauma of the possession. He finally sought help and is now focused. Dean and Sam inform Jeffrey about the recent murders and how they will try to protect him from becoming possessed by this demon again. Jeffrey reveals to them that while he was possessed, the demon burned into his mind a list of women that it wanted dead, and that he knew the name of the next woman on the hit list. Sam decides to warn the next victim, and Dean stays with Jeffrey to protect him.
Hello??!!!
Sam follows Jeffrey’s tip to stake out the next possible victim, Marjorie. She is a librarian, and Sam tries his best to remain calm and quiet in the library, though it is near impossible to do when Lucifer keeps taunting him. Lucifer has been trying to get Sam to acknowledge him, but Sam has been able to resist. Nobody other than Sam is able to see or hear Lucifer. Throughout the past few seasons, Lucifer has chosen Sam to be his vessel of choice. If Sam gives in to Lucifer’s presence, then Lucifer can get inside of Sam’s head and take him over.
Lucifer gives Sam hints about the evidence from the victims in the coroner’s reports. They have all been tranquilized, which probably means that the perpetrator is physically unable to force the women into submission. This message connects with Sam and he tries to call Dean, but all of his calls aren’t answered. Sam remembers that Jeffrey has a bad back and limps. He is in a mad dash to rush back to Jeffrey’s room at the halfway house. Once there, he scavenges through his room. Through more subtle hints from Lucifer, Sam discovers a secret compartment drawer that contains a demon summoning spell. He recognizes the handwriting as Nora’s. He also finds a cell phone signal scrambler, which now solidifies his suspicion of Jeffery, and why he is unable to reach Dean.
Sam confronts Nora about why Jeffrey has a demon summoning spell written in her handwriting. She immediately informs Sam that Jeffrey has kidnapped her son as ransom for a spell that will invoke back the demon that once possessed him. She admits that the last spell that Sam holds did not work, but the newest spell that she gave Jeffrey will definitely conjure up the demon because it is very powerful. She tells him that Jeffrey committed all of the latest murders to grab Sam and Dean’s attention so that they would be drawn back to investigate. This spell that will conjure up the demon requires that Dean be present because it needs the blood of the exorcist who cast out the demon…and that would be Dean. Nora was desperate to save her son. Sam now demands that Nora do a tracking spell to locate her son and Dean.
My Better Half
Dean was feeling a bit sorry for Jeffrey. After all, he knows how hard it is to cope when you have been embroiled in the supernatural world. Jeffrey tells Dean that when he was possessed he remembers a hideout where he would nest. Dean agrees to take Jeffrey to this place, in hopes of confronting the demon in its newest body so that they could take it down. Once they reached the abandoned warehouse Dean notices that there is a young man bound, gagged, and tied to a chair. As he tries to release the guy, Jeffrey tranquilizes Dean.
Dean wakes up tied to a chair next to the young man. Jeffrey elaborates to Dean that he quite enjoyed being possessed by the demon and that he misses the power that the demon gave him. He had always wanted to kill, but was too afraid to do it. The demon gave him the strength, and when Dean exorcised the demon, he had lost the love of his life. Dean quickly figures out that he is screwed when he sees Jeffrey take the newly adopted dog to a back room and remove its heart. Jeffrey returns and begins to conjure up the demon. While expecting the demon to enter Jeffrey, the demon chooses to enter Nora’s son. The demon tells Jeffrey that he is proud of him, but that his work is done with him. The demon tells Dean that he enters people that have the potential to kill, and gives them the knowledge and strength to do it, and once they have learned, his hope is that they carry on. Just then, Sam and Nora bust in and do an immediate exorcism. Jeffrey tries to stop them, but gets shot by Dean who has managed to escape. All ends well for Nora and her son. Dean and Sam return to their motel room exhausted. While Dean takes a nap, Sam gets another visit from Lucifer. Sam tries to ignore him, but Lucifer has won. Sam could not resist listening to him during this case and now Lucifer has permeated into Sam’s head.
