Supernatural Recap: “Everybody Hates Hitler”
Original Air Date (CW): Wednesday February 6, 2013
Season 8, Episode 13

Legacy

Ever kick yourself for not paying attention to those wild stories your grandparents told you? Either because you were too young, too self-absorbed, or just plain uninterested because you thought what they said was irrelevant? But in the back of your mind you always hoped that these stories were true and you were a part of something bigger. In this episode of Supernatural, we experience the regret of hindsight when a grandson must face the consequences for not listening to the wisdom of his elders. Being a part of a legacy has become more relevant in the series, and the responsibility rests squarely on the shoulders of the unprepared descendants. Ready or not, the past will come back to haunt you. Your ancestors have more faith in you than you realize. Always do the right thing, because you never know if someday you will need the strength of your forefathers, and disappointment is not an option!

Rabbi on Fire!

We start out this episode in 1944, smack dab in Nazi territory in Vitsyebsk, Belarus. Although heavily armed, the Nazi’s go into full panic mode when an intruder smashes through the walls and kills whoever is in its path. One of the Nazi leaders escapes the wrath of this giant man beast by use of a spell, but not before placing a book inside of a fire resistant case and then setting the compound on fire. The giant survives.

It is now present day, and we are in a university in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Isaac Bass is cataloging some old ledgers for research. He opens a peculiar book and is stunned that it is exactly what he has been searching for…that book that the supernatural Nazi protected before his disappearance act. He swipes the book and heads out to a local college pub and uses a pay phone to leave an urgent message. He is keenly aware that he is being watched and walks towards the window and screams profanities at whoever is following him outside. He spontaneously catches on fire and dies.

The “Bat Cave”

The Winchesters have arrived at an abandoned factory in Lebanon, Kansas. The coordinates for the “safe” place to hide the key they received from their grandfather baffles them…until they walk inside. Untouched for 70 years, they believe they have stumbled into the “Men of Letters” secret headquarters, or as Dean put it, their “Bat Cave”. So ultra hip and swanky, the cool lounge houses plenty of gentlemen robes and information on other secret societies. Sam researches the Judah Initiative. This secret group was run by rabbis, and Sam is able to locate a member whose name has popped up in the news recently…Rabbi Isaac Bass. They decide that this is a case.

The guys head to Pennsylvania. Sam hits up the archives to investigate what the rabbi was researching, while Dean interviews attractive college girls, of course. Sam is perplexed when he looks at the contents of the archive that the rabbi researched. It is merely a bird book. Dean listens as best he can to the college girls tell him about how the “crazy” rabbi used to go on and on about a secret war, and talk about Nazi necromancers. Dean’s attention is drawn away by a young man that is staring at him. When Dean confronts him, the guy just explains that he has been following him around because he thought they had a flirtatious “thing”. Although Dean is oddly intrigued by this, he leaves to meet up with Sam at a parking lot because Sam, too, feels as though he is being followed. When Dean arrives, he is knocked 20 feet through the air by some giant man. Sam tries to intercept the beast, but is relieved when Dean’s “admirer” from earlier commands the giant to stop. The guy, Aaron, explains that he has been following Dean because he has been poking his nose around his grandfather, the dead rabbi’s, business….and NOT because of a “gay thing.” (Dean seems a bit disappointed)

The Thule Society

The four guys head to Aaron’s place, where he explains to Sam and Dean that his grandfather left a message on his phone. It was a series of letters and numbers. Sam believes it to be a call number and he will hit up the library later to check out the location of the book. Aaron explains that this real “Golem” arrived in a box. It was sent by his grandfather. Turns out that Isaac had his own Golem and was fighting against the secret Thule Society, which is a Nazi necromancer group. Now this Golem belongs to Aaron, but he never paid attention to anything his grandfather ever said because he thought he was crazy. The Golem just keeps shouting, “Yifalchunbee” which in Hebrew means, to take charge. Aaron just doesn’t know how to take charge because the instructions he received years ago in a book had pages perfect for rolling joints. Aaron smoked the pages.

The guys head for the library to see where the call number leads them to. Sam and Aaron get darted by a Nazi named Torvald. Dean orders the Golem to go after the Nazi and he does exactly as told. He kills the Nazi, and Sam and Dean take the body and burn it before burying it…like the pros they are.

With the old Thule Society book in their hands, they see exactly what these freaks were up to. Apparently they used to experiment on people by killing them and then trying to reanimate them. The last page lists the names of every dead member of the society that has been reanimated. Possession of this book unlocks many secrets, and the Nazi, Eckhart, that magically disappeared in 1944, shows up at the library looking for Torvald and the book. He finds his way to the guys and effectively de-animates the Golem. Without their giant, the guys are put in harm’s way, and Eckhart tries to leave with the book, but not before Aaron surprises them all with an act of bravery and knocks out Eckhart. The Winchesters finish him off. Aaron now decides that he must take command of his Golem, and so writes his name on the scroll that resides in the Golem’s mouth. The Golem wakes up and is happy to see that Aaron will fulfill his legacy and protect their people against future attacks.

Dean and Sam return to the “bat cave” and settle in quite nicely. Looks as though they have a lot of information to thumb through…and a lot of bourbon to drink…perhaps while wearing ascots.

Quotable Quotes:

Dean to Sam: “Sammy, I think we found the bat cave.”

Dean to Aaron: “Why are you following me, Gingerbread?”

Aaron to the Golem: “Everybody loves bacon!”

Dean to Aaron and Sam: “Paper beats Golem. Fire beats Undead Zombie Freaks.”
