Supernatural Recap: “Citizen Fang”
Original Air Date (CW): Wednesday December 5, 2012
Season 8, Episode 9

We have reached our mid-season finale of Supernatural, season 8. Thus far, it feels as though we have been on an emotional rollercoaster with the Winchester brothers. And like any rollercoaster, the perpetual highs and lows have caught us off guard. We don’t know if we should be laughing or crying. One thing is for certain, and that is that we need to throw up our arms and keep our eyes open because this thrill ride of a show is a journey…and not a destination.

Brother versus Brother

The air is thick with the chirping sounds of a boggy Carencro, Louisiana. Benny is happily taking orders from a young lady named Elizabeth inside the Gumbo Shack. One of the patrons is Martin, a freshly released hunter from a mental ward. Come to find out that Martin has been hired by Sam to track Benny. Martin has been following Benny for an uneventful week, but is suddenly startled when he trips over a newly slashed corpse in the bayou while tracking Benny. Martin alerts Sam, and Sam informs Dean about this activity. Dean is understandably offended by Sam’s interest in taking down Benny, but agrees to go and investigate the murder. Martin admits that he still needs a bit of shock therapy to get through the day, but insists that Dean is the crazy one for defending Benny. All Dean asks for is two hours to talk to Benny because he doesn’t believe that he would kill humans anymore. Sam agrees to allow Dean a chance to speak with Benny.

Dean arrives at the Gumbo Shack and enthusiastically orders a piece of pecan pie. Although he is downtrodden when he learns that they are out, he instantly perks up when his eyes meet with the gorgeous Elizabeth. He inquires about the whereabouts of “Roy”, who is Benny’s alias. She tells him that Roy has taken off for some fishing for the next few days. Dean leaves his number with her in case he is unable to locate Roy.

Homecoming

Dean heads to the creek and finds Benny burying a recently killed lady. This doesn’t look good for Benny. He expalins to Dean that he is being framed by an old vampire buddy that is trying to crew up a new nest and wants him to be a part of it. When Benny refused, the vampire decided to commit some sloppy kills to chase Benny out, and into the safety of a clan of vampires. Benny is determined to stay in this area because it was where he was born and bred. He also explains that Elizabeth is his great granddaughter. Benny wants to remain here because he feel like he is home. Of course, Elizabeth does not know that Benny, or “Roy”as she knows him, is actually her great grandfather. This clears up all of the doubts Dean had, a now they know they must find the rogue vampire responsible for the murders and take him out of the equation.

Dean returns back to Sam and Martin to tell them Benny’s story. Both Martin and Sam don’t buy it, but Martin is so quick to the draw that he knocks out Dean before Sam has a chance to change his mind. Martin and Sam head to the creek, but as they arrive Sam receives an urgent text message from his beloved Amelia and then vanishes leaving Martin alone. Dean heads to the creek just in time to save Benny from the rogue vampire, and they successfully cut off his head. Benny realizes that he can’t stay in his hometown because if its not hunters that will be after him, it will be other vampire clans. His cover has been blown. Dean calls Martin to tell him that the problem has been solved, and that Benny is long gone.

Women!

Benny hits the road, but receives a call from Elizabeth. When he answers it, Martin is on the other end. Benny must return to the Gumbo Shack or else Martin will hurt Elizabeth. When Benny arrives, Martin holds Elizabeth hostage and demands that Benny surrender. Benny oblidges, but just as Martin is about to cut his head off, Benny slashes into him. Completely terrified, Elizabeth calls Dean to come see the aftermath. Benny has now killed a human, but in self-defense.

Sam rushes to Amelia’s house and is heartbroken when when he peers through her window. She and her husband are happily drinking beer and watching T.V. together on the coach. Throughout the episode we had seen a series of flashbacks that Sam had. He had agreed with Amelia’s husband to let Amelia decide who she wanted to be with. Sam puts it together that Dean is the one responsible for sending the text message. Sam is livid with the news that Benny has killed Martin, and refuses to listen to Dean’s support of Benny. Sam stops by the local bar for a drink, and as he gets up to leave, Amelia shows up and confronts him. And this is where we leave off until January 16th 2013.

Quotable Quotes

Benny to Dean: “I know it’s hard to believe, but I haven’t always been this cute and cuddly.”

Dean to Benny: “They see you out there, they don’t care if you’re gonna be collecting for the March of Dimes. They’re gonna slice first and ask questions later.”

Dean to Sam: “One thing I can say about Benny is that he has never let me down.”

Martin to Sam: “Brother chooses a vampire over a brother?”
