Supernatural Recap: “Reading is Fundamental”
Original Air Date: Friday May 4, 2012
Season 7, Episode 21

For Kevin Tran, all that he has worked for in his 16 years of life depends on tomorrow’s S.A.T. test score. The over-achieving academic genius has every minute of his days planned out….but today fate has other plans. Today, Kevin Tran will cross paths with the Winchesters.

The Storm Heard ‘Round the World

Sam and Dean are anxious to figure out what exactly is in this hunk of red clay that Dick Roman was so desperate to acquire. Dean weilds a hammer like Thor to crack open the chunk, and with each strike lightening and thunder crashes. Dean realizes that this could be a sign that something is unfolding…but hey, since when were the Winchesters apprehensive about anything? Within the hard soil an ancient tablet is revealed with what appears to be some sort of writing. They guys are unable to find anything that might explain what this object is or what language is scribed into it. What the guys are unaware of as well is that a 16 year old boy in Chicago was struck by one of the bolts of lightening that has sent him on a quest to find this relic. The continent wide thunderstorm even awoke Castiel from his mental seclusion.

Dean and Sam get a call from Meg that Castiel is awake. They rush straight over to see what condition he is in, since Meg has a hard time explaining it. When they arrive they see that Cas appears to be calm and serene…quite the demeanor of the old Cas…but he is a bit “off”. He distracts easily and doesn’t take anything too seriously. Dean and Sam show Cas the tablet and he informs them that it is the word of God that they unleashed. He admits that he can’t read it…nobody can read it except for the prophet. Sam scoffs when Cas tells him that it was written by Metatron (no…not the Transformer, Megatron). Cas abruptly drops the tablet and disappears into the hospital’s lounge area.

How About a Game of Sorry?

Dean decides to go and speak to Cas alone, while Sam and Meg argue about what their next step is now that Cas is awake. While playing a game of Sorry, Dean asks Cas if he remembers all of the horrible things he did when he tried to be God. Cas is unable to have a normal conversation. While Sam was distracted with Meg, Kevin Tran snuck into Castiel’s room and stole the tablet. Sam soon catches on and goes running after him. The poor frightened honors student is caught, but tearfully explains to Sam that he has no idea why he has been led there or why he has this urge to not let go of the tablet.

Sam returns to Castiel’s room with Meg and Kevin. Kevin looks at the tablet and tells them that he is able to read what it says. It is about the Leviathan and how they came into existence. Just then two angels appear and they are not happy to see their new prophet, Kevin, in the same company as a demon and a Winchester. Castiel and Dean now enter the room and the two angels, Hester and Inais are shocked to see Cas. Last time they saw him he was smoting thousands in heaven. Cas tries to explain his actions but is thankfully interrupted by Dean blowing all the angels away back to their corners by the use of an incantation. This buys them time to escape from Hester and Inais.

Blood From a Fallen Angel…Check.

Castiel calls the guys to find out their exact location so he can rejoin them. They then all decide to go to Rufus’s cabin. It is there that they hope Kevin can transcribe the word of God for the sole purpose of finding a way to defeat the Leviathan’s before they eat all of the humans as planned. Meg is being followed by fellow demons and approaches them to talk. She tells them that she can offer Crowley her angel…Cas. Just as we think that Meg is going to double cross the Winchesters, she kills off the Crowley demon henchmen. Meg returns to the cabin and warns the guys that she just killed two demons. This is like a beacon to their whereabouts and seconds later Hester and Inais show up. They fully intend on taking Kevin with them, but Hester’s anger gets the best of her and she tries to kill Cas. Proving that she is trustworthy, Meg kills Hester just in time to save Cas.

Kevin finishes up the translation and we learn that one of the ways to defeat the Leviathan is with the blood of a fallen angel. Perfect. That would be Castiel. See…everything happens for a reason. Escorted by angels, Kevin returns home, but when he arrives there a Leviathan is waiting. Somehow I just know this is a really bad thing.

Quotable Quotes:

Castiel to Dean: “Pull my finger.”
Dean to Castiel: “What?”
Castiel to Dean: “My finger. Pull it.”

Castiel to Dean and Sam: “Outside today in the garden I followed a honeybee. I saw the route of flowers. It’s all right there. The whole plan. There’s nothing to add.”
Sam to Meg: “You might want to add a little Thorazine.”
Meg to Sam: “Right?! He’s been like the naked guy at the rave ever since he woke up…totally useless.”

Castiel to Dean and Sam: “Did you know that a cat’s penis is sharply barbed along its shaft? I know for a fact the females were not consulted about that.”

Sam to Castiel: “Metatron? You saying a transformer wrote that?”
Dean to Sam: “No, that’s Megatron.”

Castiel to Dean: “The homo sapiens…sapiens. You guys ate the apple. Invented pants.”

Dean to Kevin: “So Kevin, you can, uh, read the chicken scratch on the God rock, huh?”

Castiel to Dean and Sam: “I don’t fight anymore. I watch the bees.”

Kevin to Dean: “This looks like a sex-torture dungeon. Is this a sex-torture dungeon?”

Castiel to Dean and Sam: “Always happy to bleed for the Winchesters.”
