The Winchesters live to fight another season (well.. maybe they live.. it’s hard to keep track of who’s alive and who’s dead season to season)! CW has confirmed that Supernatural will return for its 14th season, adding to its streak of not only the longest episodic television show in CW history, but in Warner Brothers’ as a whole.
I have rewatched most of the seasons at least once due in large part to turning so many friends and family members onto the series and watching it with them. Something I so sincerely appreciate about the show is how well it’s evolved. When you watch the first season, it’s clear that the CW wanted a spooky show that focussed on two young, brooding hunks that would drive the girls crazy every episode. It was well written (and dark.. I appreciated that happy endings were NOT guaranteed, making it pretty unpredictable), but.. it just still somehow gave off the vibe of being made for a fairly young audience. As the show went on, the minds behind Supernatural improved upon their storytelling abilities even more and added sometimes sarcastic, sometimes twisted humor that helped take the characters of Sam and Dean Winchester to a level that was undeniably enjoyable and endearing.
The showrunners have undoubtedly paid close attention and listened to social media and what fans of the show have to say, which seems like a no-brainer, but it isn’t that common. (Which perhaps is why making it to 14 seasons isn’t common either?) As a result, they are left with a finished product that the fans eat up.
On top of all of this is the popular opinion that the actors of the show are some extremely easy guys to love. Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles are both charmers and genuinely nice guys and Misha Collins, who has played Castiel on the series since the fourth season, is on a whole other level. From his hilarious online antics (like convincing William Shatner to be his friend after non stop pestering) to his charity work that is as heartfelt as is it fun (G.I.S.H.W.E.S. or the Greatest Internet Scavenger Hunt the World has Ever Seen being a personal favorite of mine), he is just a gem. They are some of the first to have visited their fans that slept overnight in the infamous Hall H line at San Diego Comic Con, bringing coffee, pizza and lots of hugs over the years (Misha actually got in trouble with SDCC staff for not letting them know first when he popped in with pizza one night because they didn’t have security there to protect him… so the next morning he showed back up, once again unannounced… with some stormtroopers that he said served as his private security detail). The guys know full well their show wouldn’t have made it this long without their devoted fans and seem happy to give that love right back. In turn, it makes it that much easier to support the show, which, in turn, makes this happy little circle of spooky t.v. goodness go on and on. A perfect storm, indeed.
You can catch new episodes of Supernatural on the CW every Thursday at 8pm and binge away anytime on Netflix.
