Speak No Evil (2013)

Movie Reviews Comments Off on Speak No Evil (2013)

Disturbing. Creepy. Uncomfortable. These are just a few words I would use to describe the intensely sinister independent horror film, Speak No Evil. Produced by Gas Mask Films and distributed by MINDPLATEtv, writer/director Ro Ze, takes us to a desolate small town where we are introduced to a young girl named Joey, (Olivia Cavender) who mysteriously disappears in the middle of the night after seeing a demonic entity, known as Adramelech, crawl out of the ground. Her distraught mother Anna (Dee Wallace’s daughter Gabrielle Stone) alerts the local authorities, but is quickly chastised and ignored because the town views her as an unfit and promiscuous young mother. The town finally pays attention when all of its children vanish overnight and communication is cut off to other nearby cities. Soon enough, the children return home, but they are completely deranged, animalistic, and possessed. Parents quickly turn against their offspring, else they risk becoming a meal.

Although there was not an in-depth explanation of the demon Adramelech, I was intrigued by the eerie images of its dark mule head and human torso. Being lost in the mystery of this entity’s motivation added to the panic and confusion I experienced while watching this film. The stylized edits held my attention and forced me not to look away from some truly frightening moments. This is not a big budget film, but it cleverly taps into the innate fears we all have about ancient evil. The gore factor is perfect and top-notch. I became physically ill during some of scenes, and that to me is applaudable! Adding depth and emotional dimension to the film were the carefully placed songs. I really wouldn’t mind downloading the soundtrack if ever offered.

I would highly suggest to any horror fanatic to check this independent film out!
