“Carry on my wayward son.
There’ll be peace when you are done.
Lay your weary head to rest
Don’t you cry no more.”
To every hardcore Supernatural fan, this Kansas song is our battle cry. Our motto. Our call to arms. And for 8 straight seasons, we have endured every kind of apocalyptic scenario imaginable with the Winchester brothers. You name it; they’ve faced it head on! We have witnessed the gates of Hell open, and not only experienced the wrath of demons and angels, but have also become acquainted with Pagan gods, tricksters, djinns, changelings, and a treasure trove of other mythical monsters. As the series begins on a new night it’s 9th season on Tuesday, October 8th 9/8c on the CW, it is about high time we put a spotlight on the underworld phenomena of Supernatural fandom. More specifically for this go around, a glimpse into the brotherly love between our two favorite demon hunters, Sam and Dean Winchester.
Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles)
As the older of the two Winchester brothers, the first thing you need to know about him is that he loves cheeseburgers and pie. Let’s emphasize PIE. He has a definite fear of flying. The love of his life is unquestionably the black 1967 Chevy Impala that was passed down from his father. Mess with his “baby”, and you might as well consider yourself dead meat. Don’t even think about installing any sort of mp3 or even compact disc player in the affectionately dubbed “Metallicar”. This baby only plays cassette tapes with the extensive catalogue of Black Sabbath, AC/DC. Motorhead, and Metallica…or as Sam puts it, “The greatest hits of mullet rock.” (Apparently Air Supply is acceptable, too.) It would also appear that Dean has an inner rock god, as clearly demonstrated in Season 4 Episode 6 ‘Yellow Fever’, where he honed his leg guitar skills with the song “Eye of the Tiger”.
Dean doesn’t know his way around technology too much. To him, his brother’s laptop is a source of entertainment of the adult variety. Just beware of his charming smile and beckoning green eyes because this womanizer certainly knows his way around the ladies.
Nobody is as loyal, trustworthy, and unbreakable as Dean. He spent an ungodly amount of time in Hell and Purgatory, but is so focused on hunting the demons that roam the earth that he doesn’t dwell on his misfortune. Dean is the ultimate big brother we all wish we had. He would sacrifice his very soul just to see his little brother happy. In fact, the only thing that matters to Dean is his Sammy. Watching his brother bear the burden of the Trials of God in season 8 was more than he could take.
Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki)
Okay…we are just gonna address the elephant in the room right off the bat. Jared’s hair. Many a meme has been created in glorification of his ever evolving hairdo. Not to mention sideburns. His magnificent long tresses seem to be the perfect backdrop for the tortured soul that is Sam Winchester. He has been killed and brought back to life so many times that it is astounding. He has consumed a considerable amount of demon blood during his lifetime, and possesses supernatural powers of his own, like having the ability to kill demons with his mind. He is tragically flawed and makes mistakes, but is genuinely sincere with his apologies. (Those puppy dog eyes melt us every time!) The weight of the world has rested squarely on his shoulders many times, but our 6’4 “Moose” has carried us through humanity’s darkest hours.
On a lighter note, Sam is kind of a geek. That’s a good thing. He also does not hesitate to speak his true feelings, or shrink in the face of danger. He is a health-nut, and abhors Dean’s gluttonous meal choices. We have also learned that our perennial hero has a baffling fear of clowns. (And really…who doesn’t?) More than anything else, Sam’s unequivocal love for his “jerk” brother Dean, rivals any love story…only they are siblings who have made it their life’s mission to save mankind from evil. No big whoop.
Season 9
Season 8 ended with Sam’s life in jeopardy if he completed the last Trial of God to seal the gates of Hell. Metatron had successfully expelled angels from Heaven by turning Castiel human, and a new apocalypse is inevitable. All of this seems like doom and gloom, but as a Supernatural fan, I have learned to never lose hope…EVER! Death is not the end; it’s just a new normal. (I have also learned how important it is to carry salt wherever you go…just in case). Season 9 promises to be a kaleidoscope of supporting characters, and discord of biblical proportions.
