Preview Night has always been my favorite night at San Diego Comic Con. It’s the only night the convention is open late, and oftentimes it’s a great time to get a glimpse of what can be expected over the next four days. Note that I said “oftentimes.” Over the past few years there has been such a demand for Preview Night passes that they are now sold separately, and only to those lucky few fans who are able to register for 4-day badges.
It used to be that Preview Night was dedicated to the Exhibit Hall, giving excited buyers time to scope out the floor and snatch up the exclusives before anyone else. While that is still mostly the case, there is now programming offered in Ballroom 20 for fans who want to see full-length pilot episodes of new shows.
After getting our Dark Media press badges and our Gotham “good guys” bags, we headed upstairs to the Sails Pavilion to wait for the Exhibit Hall to open.
What struck me the most about Preview Night this year (which was a continuing theme throughout the convention) was that the Exhibit Hall floor was not as crowded as it has been in the past. Instead of pushing and shoving, the floor was open and accessible, even in the traditional bottleneck areas like Marvel and DC.
Outside, workers continued to prepare the outdoor exhibits for the following day. The FX Arena was slated to open at 12pm to the public (11am to the press) and I can imagine that they worked through the night to finish up.
