“Inspired by one of the most terrifying children’s book series of all time, SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK follows a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town.”
This is the brief synopsis of what is sure to be a brilliantly executed film. Why? The modern day master of horror Guillermo del Toro is holding the reins, that’s why. The ghastly genius behind Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak and The Orphanage.
Many of us have been waiting with crossed fingers for Guillermo’s often rumored Haunted Mansion film. I, for one, am not sure if Disney could even handle what Mr. del Toro would unleash in the hallways of the Mansion. Scary Stories, however, is a pretty nice consolation prize.
The cast, so far, consists of Michael Garza, Austin Abrams, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur and Natalie Ganzhorn. André Øvredal of Trollhunter fame is set to direct.
Alvin Schwartz is the arcane author behind Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark from 1981. They were followed up by More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in 1984 and Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones in 1991.
Just slightly more disturbing than the terror filled tales were the drawings that accompanied them. Stephen Gammell’s images were so horrific that one would think they could creep off of the pages.
Well, now they will. In August 9, 2019 prepare to check under your bed and in your closet. The monsters are coming and they are looking for you.
