Ryan Murphy Talks Death, and Shares Hints About Season 3 of American Horror Story

Entertainment News Comments Off on Ryan Murphy Talks Death, and Shares Hints About Season 3 of American Horror Story

The following contains spoilers for American Horror Story: Asylum

For those familiar with the FX drama American Horror Story, this is the part of the season we know well. People start dying, and storylines come to a close.  It’s the beauty of its innovative formula; viewers are given a complete story arc, fully realized from start to finish, within the course of one season.

Last night on “The Name Game“, the story ended for two of AHS: Asylum’s major characters: Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) and former Nazi Dr. Arden (James Cromwell).  Although, it could be argued that the devil is also part of the final death count.  In interview with EW.com, showrunner and co-creator Ryan Murphy discussed the events of last night, and gave us a few hints about what to expect next season.

I really loved that ending for her character,” Murphy said about Rabe’s Sister Mary Eunice. “We didn’t want ‘she dies and the devil goes into someone else’. I liked the idea that the only thing more powerful than the devil is the Angel of Death, which is actually the cousin of the devil. I liked that ending and I thought it was good. That’s always what happens historically around episode 10, we start wrapping everything up and characters die. So this was a big one.”

On the death/suicide of Arden, following Mary Eunice’s spectacular fall, Murphy said it felt right.  “I also think the image of a Nazi doctor going into an oven is sort of a brilliant metaphor of him literally paying. Obviously, he’s a terrible character but I thought his end was very justified and somewhat poetic.”

While many are already speculating next season could involve something more magical, even hinting at the possibility that we may visit the town of Salem, Massachusetts during the infamous Salem Witch Trials, or New Orleans for a voodoo tale, Murphy himself remains vague when discussing it.  What he did reveal is the inclusion of more star-crossed lovers:

I mean, I don’t think anything could ever be as dark as the mental health care system in our country. I sorta feel like for the third version I want to do something that’s a little bit more “evil glamour.” Just something that’s a little bit more…one of the things that I missed this season was I really loved having that Romeo & Juliet youth story with Violet and Tate. I want something like that again and we’re doing something like that in the third season. And we’re contemplating shooting the show in a different place. We’re contemplating shooting it in a place in the country where true horror has been. We’ve got lots of delicious plans.
