There are several different kinds of fans of American Horror Story. Some loved the first season, saturated with constant references to classic horror as it followed a strong supernatural theme, while not being able to stay with the show when it transitioned to showcasing the horrific underbelly of humanity in Asylum. Some first discovered the show this year, and committed to every drastic (and often perverse) twist and turn. Then there are those who’ve enjoyed both, knowing the themes within the canon of American horror are often diverse, complex and unspeakably disgusting — with a purpose. And they know, as the actors of AHS themselves will always say, the stories told on American Horror Story are always in very capable hands with co-creator Ryan Murphy.
And as Asylum comes to a close, with its season/series finale airing next Wednesday, Murphy told reporters today even more about his vision for Season 3 — and gave a little boost to all the “Salem Witch Trial” speculation. “What Season 3 is about is more historical in nature,” Murphy said, as reported by TV Guide. “I’m also interested into getting into a horror romance. That’s certainly something that’s going to be in the water for Season 3.”
And for those who feel this season has been too drastic, or too dark, look for Season 3 to reflect Murphy’s personal desire to lighten the mood.
”You’re going to see a very different tone in Season 3. As a person right now, I do feel lighter and wanting to embrace something a little bit more fun. I want to do something next season that’s funnier. I really miss that Jessica Lange as Constance, and I know she missed it, too.”
But what about the monster of the new season? First we had the Rubberman, then Bloody Face, and now…?
“We do have a great icon,” Murphy said. “And it’s a woman.”
Also look for returning cast members Jessica Lange, Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson in Season 3, all confirmed by Murphy today. As for the rest, including the theme, we’ll just have to wait and see.
