by John Stambersky:
When you look at the cover of Revelation: Creatures Rule the Night, a painting of a creepy forest lit by a full moon, you’re immediately thinking Twilight. You can almost feel the vampires and werewolves slinking through the shadows. But you’re in for a surprise.
Revelation is actually an epic tale spanning from pre-Roman Brittain to 2246 AD Mars. Told in the form of a memoir, the story follows Star Base officer John Armand on his journey from cadet at Star Base academy to renegade fulfiller of ancient prophecies. Ambitious in its scale and depth, the book begins a science-fiction war story and morphs into a tale of demons and magic, with the love story of Ellie, the girl next door type we’re all rooting for Armand to tell how he really feels, wrapped around.
Connors blends the elements of sci-fi (scaly, sword-swinging aliens and spaceship laser-blast dogfights) and the supernatural (demonic entities and foreshadowed prophecies) nicely. While the book does not always hit the mark in terms of character development (particularly the supporting players, many of whom are rather one-dimensional) the pace and imagination of the story makes it worth a read, and left me curious about what future installments might bring.
