The Originals S1E7 “Bloodletting” Review

The Originals (The CW) Comments Off on The Originals S1E7 “Bloodletting” Review

Original Air Date (CW): November 12, 2013

What happened?

In this episode, we see Hayley kidnapped by Tyler, who wants to kill her unborn baby in order to prevent Klaus from creating another army of hybrids. Because, you know, the last one didn’t go so well (see: Klaus Murders Everyone). The kidnapping plot is foiled by Klaus, who decides to let Tyler live. Again. Why? Who knows. More and more it seems like Klaus deciding to let Tyler live, after telling him repeatedly he’s going to kill him, is a weak spot in the writing. He should have been dead six times over by now, and Klaus needs to make that right (sorry, Tyler). Following that, Haley learns a little more about her wolf-dynasty past, and possibly her real name: Andrea.

Marcel showed his true colors in Fight Club: Vampire Edition, where his night-walkers battle for a daylight ring. He and Rebekah rekindle their relationship and hatch a new plan to destroy Klaus.

Davina, still confined to the attic, reminisces about the past and bonds with one of Marcel’s vampires.

Following Haley’s rescue, Klaus bites Elijah, poisoning him. We know it won’t kill him, but presumably was done to keep him out of the way (and remind everyone else who is boss) Meanwhile, Tyler has fled to Marcel to join the mounting army against Klaus.

What do we think will happen?

Klaus alternates between being paranoid about betrayal while longing for affection from said betrayers, so we expect he’s already onto Rebekah’s plans, and will cure Elijah with his blood before the end of the next episode.

Unless…

Doesn’t the hybrid baby have its own healing properties thanks to Klaus’ DNA? We think Haley may also have the opportunity to heal Elijah in her own special way.

Rebekah may be showing signs of finally growing a backbone and escaping the clutches of her domineering brothers, but we suspect lingering loyalty, loneliness, and the promise of impending auntyhood might keep her anchored on the side of her family – for now.

Marcel doesn’t seem to know what to do with the witch he’s hiding in the attic, so we predict Davina isn’t going anywhere – yet.

Favorite Moments:

Klaus is a bad ass: The writers flash back to his greatest hits of murder and mayhem.

Tyler’s return: it appears the Mystic Falls native survived his first reunion with Klaus and transitioned nicely. Will Caroline follow?

Elijah: A steady presence in every episode continues to anchor the show and bring out Klaus’ worst – which is to say, his best.

Overall Thoughts:

Each week, CW turns out a fast-paced, well-written story, complete with the twists and turns the network is known for, while still remaining anchored and not straining (too much) the bonds of credulity as much as one might expect from a drama about royal vampires and hybrid werewolves. With the recent full season order slated for 2014, we’re looking forward to seeing how this season plays out, and what they have planned for us next.
