I would never have thought to combine the Old West and Kabbalah into a single novel but Edward M. Erdeiac has done so beautifully with an intriguing story that grabs the reader from the first page. The Merkabah Rider is a collection of four tales of The Rider, the last of an American group of the Jewish mystic order of the Sons of the Essenes. He is traveling through the Old West searching for his former teacher who has turned against the order, slaughtering everyone save The Rider.
In these four separate stories, we learn a little more about The Rider as he encounters demons that demand the sacrifice of children, a devil that even Lucifur’s minions look down upon, a man who has given himself over to an evil spirit and a creature that knows The Riders deepest kept secret.
I am not of Jewish descent nor have I studied Jewish texts or faith. Fortunately, you do not need to have done so to read Merkabah Rider. The author has helpfully included a list of Jewish terminology used in the book to help those of us with limited experience understand the novel and is also able to include as much explanation as possible within the story itself without interrupting the flow for the reader.
If you enjoy stories of the Old West and stories of a mystical nature, you will enjoy Merkabah Rider. Don’t be put off by the religious nature of the book. It does not preach to you but instead uses religion as a background to an interesting and different look at the supernatural.
