Keep Screaming & Carrie On…

by C.S. Kane:

With another big-screen version of the gloriously gory Carrie gaining promotional momentum the question arises as to why this blood curdling story continues peak such interest and why is Carrie being resurrected once again? The seminal Stephen King novel, released in 1974, broke boundaries with its quirky narrative structure and shocking content. The fact that the most horrifying violence takes place in locations that are usually reserved as havens of security such as the home and school adds to the twisted tone of the novel. This is the sublime source material that spawned a series of Carrie related productions.

The 1976 feature film Carrie is a master class in cinematic horror. The film was directed by Brian De Palma and starred Sissy Spacek in the title role. Through graphic images and moody atmospheric cinematography it manages to maintain a spellbinding hold on the viewer. A pulsating throb of menace lurks in every scene from the infamous shower sequence to the crescendo of mutilation and murder exacted by the abused Carrie. Subsequent invocations including a musical, sequel and tv movie prove that the narrative of this twisted tale can be translated in very different ways. Yet, in 2013 Carrie is coming back to the big screen.

Why is Carrie rising from the grave once more? It seems there must be a level of sympathy or even apathy towards the willowy anti-hero. Many in the audience may reel at the high school reckoning scene yet many will root for the real victim of the story and fully condone her urge to wreak revenge on everyone that has wronged her. The characterisation of Carrie strikes a chord with anyone that has been jeered at, sneered at or tortured in school. As long as bullies exist so will Carrie. She is judge, jury and executioner of teenage tormentors. She also refuses to go quietly. The concept “what goes around comes around” will never remain buried for very long…much like Carrie herself.
