by Michele Pearson:
I’ve been a Stephen King fan since I was twelve years old and got my hands on Pet Sematary. Since then, I’ve read the majority of King’s works and watched most of the film adaptations. While I love his horror stories, King’s latest book, Joyland, has now joined the ranks as one of my favorites.
Reading Joyland, I was reminded of two of my other favorite books: The Body (Better known as Stand By Me) and The Green Mile. Using the right mix of supernatural, mystery and thriller, you’re grabbed from the first sentence. Add in a splash of coming of age drama and this book also tugs at your heart.
Devin Jones, a twenty-one year old college student hanging on tight to a doomed relationship, takes a summer job at the Joyland amusement park. He quickly becomes thick as thieves with his housemates and co-workers, Erin and Tom. He also grabs the attention Rosalind Gold, Joyland’s own resident psychic. While he brushes off her predictions for his “dark days”, Devin is intrigued by her warnings to avoid the Horror House ride. When he asks other carnies for an explanation, they tell him that the Horror House is haunted by the young girl who was murdered there.
To give away any more would do you, the future reader, a disservice. This book will reveal all it’s secrets in good time. Joyland was difficult to put down and was a relatively fast read. King has a talent for writing characters that you can’t help but love as well as those you can’t help but hate. His descriptions are so vivid you are in the story, not just reading it.
While available on Amazon, don’t look for this book in your Kindle store. Joyland is not available for e-readers at this time. But, you know what? This is one of those books that you want to sit down with and physically flip the pages, savoring the story as you take the time to relax and enjoy. Consider the break from electronics a gift from your friend Stephen King.
Joyland is now available on Amazon.com.
