Jack Reacher (2012)

Entertainment Comments Off on Jack Reacher (2012)

by C.S. Kane:

It was with great enthusiasm that I headed to the cinema for my annual Boxing Day tradition of catching a supercharged, high-octane action movie. The trailer for Christopher McQuarrie’s film adaptation of Lee Child’s One Shot left me in no doubt that there would be some thrilling sequences to enjoy whilst munching on my popcorn.

Jack Reacher brought with it some great twists and turns. Even the casting of Tom Cruise as the 6‘5” ex-army homicide investigator raised a few eyebrows initially. However, I found the anxiety surrounding Cruise taking on the role as entirely misplaced. From the beginning of the story a certain tone of brutality was evident. A lone shooter murders five seemingly innocent people in broad daylight leaving behind a trail of clues. It seems that the case is an easy one for the cops to close as they track and arrest former military solider James Barr (Joseph Sikora). The plot thickens as Barr asks for Reacher by name and we come to learn through a spiked and charged conversation between Reacher and Barr’s defense attorney, Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), that Barr is far from being an innocent man. Yet, the story isn’t so simple and we follow Reacher as his investigations take him deeper into the shadows. The violence becomes more intense and at times cruel. An evil entity lurks in the dark whereas Reacher thrives in it and confidently, boldly he strides into a thrilling showdown.

There are inspired supporting appearances from Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins and Werner Herzog in the movie. Cruise is on top form portraying a combination of both a charming, lawless drifter and a lethally efficient combatant. Reacher is worth a viewing and fell firmly in the “popcorn movie” folder. Not as gritty as Bourne, not as suave as Bond but Jack Reacher is certainly boxing clever.
