In the Company of Zombies

Arts and Literature, Short Fiction and Poetry Comments Off on In the Company of Zombies

by William Schoff:

I’m in the company of zombies
and feel sorely out of place,
for I’m the only one who’s standing here
resembling the human race.
These ‘things’ which have surrounded me
have the stench of death and mold.
And the way they moan and slog about
has made my blood run cold!

Their eyes are absent or decayed
or dangle loosely from their sockets.
(I wonder when they do fall out
if they put them in their pockets?)
Most just have a vacant space
where their nostrils used to be.
and where they once had scads of teeth
They’re left with two or three.

A grisly ghoul right next to me
is exposing guts and bones,
And the remaining ribs remind me of
a gruesome xylophone.
His rotting flesh slides off in slabs
in a way I find unnerving!
I lost my shoe in the residue
and it’s really quite disturbing.

These creatures howl out for brains
but I stay meek and quiet.
(Human parts don‘t appeal to me;
besides, I’m on a diet!)
So in haste I’ll make a bold escape
from this ghastly situation.
I think I’ll decline a membership
in this morbid congregation!

William Shoff lives in upstate New York where he is a second grade classroom teacher. He has tried his hands at other types of writing (short fiction, plays, etc.) through the years but has finally found his niche in children’s poetry. He loves the use of humor, especially via word play. His favorite authors include Robert Louis Stevenson, A.A. Milne, and Jack Prelutsky.

He currently has two published books through Outskirts Press and a third one in the works. One is entitled ‘I’m Not Feeling Like Myself Today’ and the other is entitled ‘Something Strange’. They are both collections of humorous poetry which appeal not only to children but to adults as well due to the word play, recognizable humor, and vocabulary. In addition to the poems, he also created the illustrations, with photography being another of his interests.

His web site is www.wschoffpoetry.weebly.com.
