Hemlock Grove S1E5 Recap: “Hello, Handsome”

Hemlock Grove (Netflix) Comments Off on Hemlock Grove S1E5 Recap: “Hello, Handsome”

Original Release Date (Netflix): Friday April 19, 2013

Well readers, this episode of Hemlock Grove starts off with an advertisement for the Godfrey institute It goes on to talk about how they are dedicated to saving lives and whatnot, with the final slogan being, “The Godfrey Institute. For a better life.”

What follows that is lightning and a shot of Shelley’s crib. We see her father’s tires screech to a halt at the Institute. JR brings Shelley’s corpse to Dr. Pryce as he waits for him, drenched in rain. Dr. Pryce asks what condition the body is in but all JR can say is, “Her name is Shelley. Shelley.” Dr. Pryce runs into the building with her little coffin, and credits roll!

Interesting things brew behind the walls of the Godfrey Institute. Here there may be dragons.
Next we are shown Peter being waved at by Shelley as Letha sits with him, eating fruit. She talks about Peter and Roman being friends and asks him to take care of Roman. Peter asks about Olivia, and Letha tells the story of how JR and Olivia met. She says, “Further reports indicate that he was bedazzled from the start.” And Peter teases her for using that word. Letha goes on to say, “On the day they buried her husband the local papers described my aunt as the most beautiful and despised woman in Hemlock Grove.”

Not the most bedazzling words now are they?

After opening a box of candy, Peter pulls out a prize that just happens to be a ring with a snake eating its tail. He tells Letha it means good luck, and hands it to her while Roman watches from a distance.
Pretty creepy.
The next scene is Dr. Chasseur visiting Dr. Pryce. She’s in the lab with him as her eyes wander over some specimens he has out in the open. They talk about tomorrow’s festivities, the 20 year anniversary of the institute and an ode to the late founder, JR Godfrey. They then move on to talk about other matters, as he shows her he’s recording the conversation. He calls her out on the fact she’s researched him, and then they talk of his paper about corpses, a baby’s corpse, and how if it is still in good condition you could reanimate it. He asks her how the paper is of any importance to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. She outright asks him if any of his test animals have gotten out, or any of his human subjects. We get a flash of someone running through the woods, before Dr. Pryce says flatly, “None whatsoever.”

I know reading the conversation between these two isn’t as interesting as watching it. So I will skip some of it. But I will make note that he shows her how strong he is, that he has a hysterical strength as it were. He shows her this in reference to saying that the killer might be a pathological sexual predator, capable to doing things with the viciousness of an animal.

Of course, this also makes him a suspect. Then again, Dr.Pryce is a creepy bugger so I don’t blame Clementine one bit for thinking him such.

After her encounter with Dr. Pryce, Clementine is pretty shaken. She takes a swig from her hidden bottle and gets a strange call from a bishop. He asks her if she’s drinking again. She looks around with shock and says, “what if I said it wasn’t true?” He claims he’d believe her until he had reason to believe otherwise, and tells her she has always been his favorite.

A strange conversation to have don’t you think?

Then we get a flash to 5 years later, where Clementine is tossed into a cell with a pregnant woman. The Pregnant woman claims INS picked her up for no reason, and that she doesn’t want to have her baby here. She tells Clementine that God doesn’t want us to be happy; he wants us to be strong. The woman plays with a medallion in her hands, the same one that Clementine wears now. We see Clementine now, praying on that necklace as she kisses it. She looks at the bottle and then tosses it back in the glove box as she tries to steal herself. She looks at the picture of Peter again in contemplation.

We are then brought back to Peter talking to Christina. He says he’s sorry to her and she tells him he won’t get away with it. She’s convinced he’s the werewolf that did it. She finds a dark place to cry it out, and finds a white strand in her hair.

The next scene is Roman with his mother and one of the police officers. Shelley is asked by Olivia to go up to her room, while they talk. The officer tells him that the open grave Roman and Peter were at have the footprints of Roman’s gardener, who’s been in the hospital. So they know someone else did it. Olivia is understandably angry. Roman claims someone stole the gardener’s shovel, and the officer tells Mrs. Godfrey that there is a reward for information on what happened. After the cop leaves, Olivia confronts Roman. She knows they did it, and she calls Peter “Gypsy scum” while she crews Roman out. She slaps him several times when he tries to defy her, and she demands he be at the gala. With that said, Roman knows his place.

The next scene is Roman questioning Peter about visiting his cousin while they drive in his car. Roman is still angry about his mother, and you can tell by his mannerisms.

The scene changes abruptly back to Clementine’s past, and we see her make a weapon out of some metal she breaks off. The pregnant girl tries to talk to her, but Clementine is cold. The girl sees her tattoo and says, “you’re in the military. That means you have people. Someone who cares about you.” Clementine says very little, but tells her she has a brother. The girl notices what Clementine is making and says, “Please take me with you when you go. I can’t have my baby her.” They make an agreement, and the girl helps her sharpen the metal into a weapon, as she thanks Clementine for helping her.

The scene goes to Peter and Roman meeting up with Destiny. Destiny sends off a client and then kisses Peter as he introduces Roman to her. She looks at his palm and then asks if Peter has anything for her. He gives her candy and then the intestines they dug up. She opens it up, smells it and then puts a little caterpillar into the jar. She says to the caterpillar, “Hello, Handsome.” Before sitting it into the jar. She asks Peter to get some tequila for her for later.

While Peter and Roman leave Destiny, Roman talks about her, and is a bit unnerved at how Destiny trades everything, including her body. Peter says, “Women do what they do, that’s the hell of it.” And they have a chuckle over it.

The scene then changes to Francis and Norman talking. Francis says he doesn’t like sedatives and Norman asks if there is anything else he can tell him about Oroboros. Francis claims that it’s the reason “…they kill us.” Norman doesn’t understand and Francis tells him he doesn’t want to see. “You don’t want to do this.” When Norman asks about the dragon again, Francis tells him, “Why don’t you ask that beady-eyed little fucker Pryce?”

The next scene is Destiny and Peter. Roman is off at the gala and Destiny warns Peter that if things go wrong he could end up in a cage. She also tells him that things could get messy, as she opens the jar and it starts to bleed strangely all over. She pulls the little caterpillar out and puts it in her mouth, drinks the tequila shot to wash it down and licks her fingers. She then looks at Peter and says, “Now!” as he ties her down. She tells him this goes fast and he should ask his questions fast. Then as it hits her, her eyes go back and she grunts in pain. When he asks her, “what can you tell me about your death,” She meets his gaze and says quickly, “ I came to Hemlock Grove because of an invitation. It was dark. There was no one else there. I thought that was part of it and…” He stops her and says, “Wait what invitation?”

And all she can say is, “Fun, fun fun.” Her voice gets all strange as she says that, then she goes on to say, “I parked, got out but left my keys in the car. Ding, ding ding. I was alone, I thought, but then he was there, all big and all black – Ding, ding, ding.”

She starts panicking and Peter holds her as she describes the big “dog” she just wanted to pet, because she had a way with dogs. There is this helplessness in her eyes, when she describes the yellow eyes and the helpless way he looked at her. After that she vomits and the caterpillar is still alive. She spits and tell shim she has to brush her teeth.

Pretty intense scene guys!

After that we see Dr.Pryce talking about Clementine and his encounter with her. He’s talking into a tape recorder, and even describes his punctuation into it as he describes her mannerisms and behavior. He is one of those people who you know watches everything way too closely and treats life as a constant experiment. Norman shows up and Dr. Pryce tries to play nice, despite how cold and bitter Norman is to him. He demands to know about Oroboros, and Dr. Pryce describes the project as a spaghetti project he is doing with pit vipers. Norman demands why a homeless man in his care would be raving about pit vipers and Dr. Pryce asks if this person is Francis Pullman. Apparently Pullman was a test subject at one time. He shows Norman the poster he must have seen that “explains” the dragon that’s been talked about.

As they have their heated conversation, (well heated on Normans side) Dr. Pryce mentions that the firm Lod LLC wants to buy out Norman’s share of the company. They also argue about Shelley, and how she should have stayed dead. He also threatens Dr. Pryce that if he had any involvement in his daughter’s condition that he’d have him killed.

The next scene is of Peter and Destiny again. He’s cleaning the floor for her as she comes out of the shower. She tells him to be careful around Roman and his mother, and that she saw a conversion in his heart line and fate line. Peter tells her he better get going. She reminds him before he leaves why Nicolai was so afraid of Upir and to never forget what he is, especially if he has. Before he leaves he asks her about angels and she replies with, “Angels are messengers that help us better understand God. Why are you asking me about angels?” he tells her about a girl at his school and she says, “What is it with you and crazy girls?”

Good question…maybe werewolves like the crazy ones?

We then get to see sweet Shelley again, as she plays with a dollhouse in her room. Dr. Pryce shows up unexpectedly, and they share a hug. There is deep affection between the two, affection I don’t see Dr. Pryce giving anyone else. Must because she is his “creation.” Of course Shelley isn’t dressed for the gala that night. While they hug it out, Olivia loses her shit looking for some vials. She finally finds one after tearing her room apart and uses the last drop within it, falling to the floor.

Dr.Pryce questions Shelley’s relationship with Norman and says he understands and that he’s not cross with her. But he tells her what he is going to do is a secret out of necessity. That she cannot divulge this to Norman or anyone. There is something unsettling in his tone, but Shelley doesn’t see it. He asks her if she’s ever shown her mother her poetry, and tells her there is no shame in keeping secrets. “Oroboros is that important and that vulnerable.”

The next scene is Clementine back in the cell. She asks what the girl is gonna name her baby as she makes a hand wrap for the blade. She looks at the moon, and when she did that I could guess what was going to happen next. She tells the girl it’s time just as she starts to shift. In mid-shift she kills the girl, viciously with the homemade blade. After it is done a man in a suit comes to get her out. He tells her she did good work and the bishop will be pleased. Clementine is told welcome to the Order of the Dragon as she is released.

SO IT IS AN ACTUAL ORDER! I was wondering that…and I wonder if they “protect” said dragon.

Clementine takes the necklace the girl was wearing, and we see her in the present, watching people enter the gala. She sees Norman and his wife pull up in a limo, then Dr. Pryce go in, then Roman and Letha.

Inside the gala is pretty much what you expect from a party thrown by rich people. Everyone is dressed to the nines, drinking, eating. Olivia greets Roman and calls him beautiful. We then see a man named Dale talk to his wife about JR being gone and says vicious things about Roman and Olivia. Roman tells Letha she should have her baby in the institute. She says whatever’s best and throws up. Her mother scolds her for not acting pregnant enough. Her mother drives her home, leaving Norman at the gala. Norman and Olivia share a look as Roman drinks a lot of bourbon.

In the washroom Norman encounters Dale going on about Olivia and Roman, and he tells Dale to go sleep it off. Roman also overhears it, as he comes out of one of the stalls. He looks pissed. He goes off with some girl and watches the party from one of the labs above the gala. He overhears his mother go on about his father, giving a grand speech and crying while he does drugs with the girl and fools around with her. Dale of course makes a scene and is dragged off, Norman actually coming to Olivia’s defense. And while this happens, Roman cuts open his chest, freaking out the girl. He says to her, “Please tell Theo that the institute will be in good hands.”

Roman has some serious issues gang!

Norman watches Olivia give the rest of her speech, when she slowly turns her head, looking in the direction of Roman.

And so concludes another episode of Hemlock Grove!

It’s getting really interesting don’t you think? I would love to hear your opinions in the comments. I’m thinking the Order of the Dragon is a cult within the Catholic Church that protects the Dragon somehow…not sure why they would, or what the dragon is, but I guess we will see!
