Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Movie Reviews Comments Off on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I wasn’t planning on going to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 the day it came out, but when I heard that there would be multiple post credit scenes I thought I better. Not because I’m a huge fan of Guardians of the Galaxy. Which I will admit, I’m not. It’s not that it’s a bad movie, I love the movie. Everything about it is great. But I don’t want to be one of those people that pretends to be a fan of something afterwards. I guess it would be called “jumping on the bandwagon” but I don’t see many people use that term. I know people that have been fans of Guardians of the Galaxy since they were kids and I don’t want to rob them of this exciting time. So let it be known I am a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy after they became famous.

I decided to watch it because I heard there would be multiple post credit scenes. And I hate for that to get spoiled. I hate for any of the movie to get spoiled. That is why I have avoided anything related to Guardians of the Galaxy on social media. (Not an easy thing to do.) So I bought the ticket on Tuesday and I thought that I just had to go the rest of the week without getting it spoiled, which could be hard since people will have seen it before me and will want to talk about how great it is.

One thing I should mention, I bought my ticket two weeks before it was scheduled to open. But I didn’t know that. For some reason I was under the impression that then was now. And all the signs were there saying it was too soon. For instance, when I bought my ticket, every seat was available. And people would ask me “How are you watching it now?” I thought that an odd question so I answered “With my eyes.” But I digress.

I will try and keep this as spoiler free as possible. Although if you have been on social media, it might have already been spoiled for you. Still, to describe Guardians of the Galaxy in one word I would have to say: family. After watching it and you think about it you will realize what I say is true. I won’t say much else since I am trying to keep the spoilers to a minimum.

Another thing I thought, part of the success of Guardians of the Galaxy could be that they were an unknown super hero team. Yes, they did have a fan base but not a very big one. When you compare them to others like The Avengers, Justice League, Harry Potter or Star Wars. Guardians of the Galaxy might be lucky to be in the single digits, percentage wise. Of course I am talking before the first movie. Yet here that’s a great thing. Since very few people have heard of them the “That’s not supposed to happen” complaints were kept to a very bare minimum. This could be considered an original science fiction movie with great special effects and an amazing storyline. Other licensed movies could have been great science fiction movies. Yet, since they were licensed there was a large fan base with a checklist counting off everything right and wrong with the movie. The most recent Fantastic Four movie comes to mind.

Now let’s not forget an important person here, the scriptwriter. James Gunn directed the movie and is credited as a writer and man did he hit it out of the park with this one. The dialogue was great and he somehow figured out how to make a movie that is both serious and goofy at the same time. The movie Batman and Robin tried this and ended up being one of the worst super hero movies of all time. (Yes, even worse than Spiderman 3. At least I finished that one.)

Another thing that may have made this great was that James Gunn was also the director. Why is that important? Because both the writer and director share the same vision. Often times a screenplay will be written then given to a director. If the director and writer collaborate during the film they have the possibility of making something grand. If they don’t, which happens most times, the movie could still be great but it might not be the original idea that the writer had. Now don’t get me wrong. The actors and special effects were amazing. Yet without the writing or direction, what would the actors and the rest of the crew be doing?

Finally, this is a movie I would like to watch in 3D. At least the opening credits. Once again I can’t explain why, since that would spoil part of the movie, but once you see it you will understand. And I will mention one spoiler. Stan Lee is in one of the post credits scenes. Although I won’t say which one or what he is doing. You have to watch the movie to find out. So have I intrigued you enough to watch the movie? As if anyone was not thinking of watching it to begin with.
