Haunted by the Past
Horror is all over television these days. From zombie invasion with the Walking Dead to serial killers in Dexter, you can’t turn to a channel without getting scared! But there’s a long history of horror on television and if the latest True Blood just doesn’t grab you anymore, head into the archives of the 1990s and reach for Ghost Stories: Season 1 and 2.
Airing between 1997 and 1998, there are 22 episodes over two seasons. Unlike much of the horror on television today, these shows go back to the Gothic tradition of psychological fear. Season one opens with a troubled marriage, a suspected murder, and a longing for happiness with a price at the end. A tabloid writer conjures the ghost of a serial killer and pays dearly. A haunted mental institution hides very deep, dark secrets. Season two continues the ghosts, supernatural, and pure evil. Long dead clansmen walk again. The Angel of Death arrives during the Civil War. Lies and deceit hide a disturbed and lonely childhood. The elderly turn monstrous when the young squander their lives away. Obsessions with horror movies goes terribly wrong. There is very little violence in this series. Instead, it’s Hitchcock territory with shadows, the unseen, and the classic twist that you never saw coming.
The episodes are short coming in at around 21 minutes (minus commercials). They fit in great between the horror movies and candy corn Oreos! If the daily dose of modern horror isn’t your cup of tea or if you’ve run through it all and need more, this series is definitely worth checking out!
Ghost Stories (Season 1 & 2) can be found on Amazon Instant Video.
