The Doctor Who Season Finale will soon be here. So far the new season of Doctor Who has introduced us to some terrifying new monsters for the Doctor and Clara to fight. We have seen the return of some familiar foes, and there has even been an adventure into the centre of the TARDIS. Now with the series finale only weeks away, Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman, and show runner Steven Moffat have offered some hints about what to expect from the last few episodes of the season – revealing that the Season Finale will reveal the truth about Clara.
Next weeks new episode is The Crimson Horror, written by Mark Gatiss. It features the return of Madame Vastra, Jenny, and Strax and it also stars Dame Diana Rigg and her daughter, Rachel Stirling. This is the first time they have worked together on screen, and they play two Victorian ladies, who share a dark and terrible secret.
Speaking to the Offical BBC Doctor Who Website, Jenna-Louise Coleman said: “I loved the way she operated and carried herself… It was great to sit back and watch how mother and daughter worked and their dynamic together.’ Matt agrees, adding, ‘It was an intriguing and creative experience watching mother and daughter work together… Dame Diana has had such an illustrious career and Rachael is a great actress.”
Steven Moffat was also thrilled to have such big name guest stars for The Crimson Horror: “It’s obviously a great honour to have either of those actors on the show, but to have them acting together for the very first time on anything is quite extraordinary. Only Doctor Who can do this and possibly only when Mark Gatiss is behind it.”
Following on from this adventure the Doctor and Clara will face the Cybermen in a Nightmare in Silver. This episode is written by Neil Gaiman, it also features a new look for the Cybermen, and Neil Gaiman has said that he will make the Cybermen scary again, which will no doubt heighten the excitement for this episode. Matt Smith didn’t give much away about the new Cybermen, but he did hint that: “I think they’ll surprise a few people…”
When asked about the new look Cybermen, show runner Steven Moffat said: “One of the things that the Cybermen historically like to do before involving themselves in a new military campaign is run up a new outfit. Throughout the classic series they always changed their appearance and we’ve been very consistent with them. I thought it was time that they went back to their tailor and had a re-model!”
The season finale is called, The Name of the Doctor, and promises to be one of the best episode so far. “The finale story is such a fantastic idea; it’s epic and huge and filled with drama. It was really exciting to sit down and read the script,’ Jenna said of the final episode. ‘There are little bits and pieces which Steven planted a couple of years ago. It’s just really clever and a crucial moment in the Doctor’s life that you get to explore with the best baddies! I really think they are going to become another Moffat classic!” Matt agrees about the ‘baddies’, a brand new enemy known as the Whisper Men. ‘They’re truly terrifying!’ he tells us, before dropping a few more hints about what we can expect to see in the adventure. ‘With the 50th this is going to be by far the biggest year in the history of the show. And the finale is just the start. It focuses on a pivotal moment in the Doctor’s life and the life of his companion…”
It has been officially confirmed that this episode will finally solve the mystery of “the impossible girl”, having kept the secret for so long, it would seem that Jenna is looking forward to being able to discuss the enigma surrounding her character. ‘I am, I can’t wait!’ she admits. ‘All I can say is that Clara hasn’t just met the Doctor three times before…’ Matt agrees, but is reluctant to give away to much about the finale. ‘It’s a complete game changer,’ he concedes with a smile, ‘…and it all starts now!’
Final word about The Name of the Doctor goes to Steven Moffat, who revealed that this episode will be one of the series most ambitious yet: “It’s full of surprises and questions that have never been answered in the history of Who, including the Doctors greatest secret. We’re not pretending, we’re not kidding, it’s actually going to happen. The episode is called The Name of the Doctor and involves our hero in a conflict that is very, very personal to him. Usually he’s saving other people, but this time he might be the one who needs to be saved. We’ll also find out what makes his new companion so impossible and there’s a surprise that no one has got right so far, and one that will change the course of Who forever!”
The build up to the epic season finale begins this week, with The Crimson Horror, on BBC America this Saturday – 4th of May.
