The following contains spoilers from Season 6 of Dexter.
One week from today, Dexter returns to Showtime for what promises to be an explosive, and unprecedented, season in the history of the show. Season 7 begins right where we left off, as Deb discovers something she may have suspected all along — Dexter is a murderer. What unravels after this is anyone’s guess. Although, from the promos we can see Deb doesn’t turn Dexter into the police… at least not yet. What we don’t know is the answer to one very important question: How does it all end? Can Deb actually live with the burden of having finally seen Dexter’s Dark Passenger, or will Dexter be forced to make a choice?
Many fans were left somewhat disappointed by last season, in spite of outstanding performances by Colin Hanks and Edward James Olmos as the Doomsday Killers (DDK). Well, only Colin was a real serial killer, but Olmos delivered the goods as the imaginary version of Professor James Gellar — mastermind behind a series of horrific killings, which ultimately served as morbidly apocalyptic tableaux vivants: corpses (or soon-to-be-corpses) depicting passages from the Book of Revelation. From what fans reported, the disappointment didn’t necessarily stem from the plot itself; the problem with the events of season 6 revolved around the fact that they didn’t meet the specific expectations of the teaser trailers. These trailers (and promotional posters) seemed to imply Dexter would find a higher purpose for his killings, and that there was potential for Dexter’s Dark Passenger to become a Dark Messenger or, further than that, a Dark Deliverer. The angel symbolism definitely loomed large. It could have taken the show in a whole different direction, psychologically, as the voice in Dexter’s head would have transformed from Harry into something a little more… divine.
But that isn’t what ultimately happened, and those who were under the impression they were on assignment from the Almighty are dead and gone. We start afresh now, with Deb’s discovery at the center of it all.
No matter what your thoughts are on the last season, or any of the previous seasons, this is the moment we’ve all been waiting for — which is also the moment Dexter has been dreading.
