Dark Art: “Veins and Skulls”

Daniele Serra has something to show us – a very special collection. I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of his new art book Veins and Skulls. This morning I took a meander through the pages and took in the macabre and mesmerizing sights held within. Daniele Serra is an artist with a difference. He has produced work for notable publishing outlets including DC Comics, PS Publishing, Cemetery Dance and many more. His work has been published internationally and he has received a British Fantasy Award.

Veins and Skulls is simply beautiful in its darkness. The book is broken into three parts with an introduction by award winning author Jeff J. Mariotte. Part I pulls you in through swathed slices of black and coffee colored hues. The subjects are as intense as they are interesting. The use of sombre expressions and subtle smiles piques the interest and leads to a deep contemplation of each and every concept explored in the elegant illustrations. Part II takes us into an altogether more sensuous study of the female form while maintaining the shadowy edge that makes Serra’s work so captivating. Finally, we move to Part III where charcoal and ochre landscapes fill the pages. The fluidity of these stunning images almost invite you to step inside and explore the desolate and dark buildings on the page

“Look into his art and it looks into you,” Rasmsey Campbell has stated in relation to this book. He is completely right. You are drawn into the work, pulled forth into the pages through the subjects and style on show. Veins and Skulls is one for those that like art to be seductive, sinister and utterly entrancing.
