Constantine S1E4 “A Feast of Friends” Recap

Constantine (NBC) Comments Off on Constantine S1E4 “A Feast of Friends” Recap

A man obviously isn’t feeling well and is trying to get through customs.  He’s just come from the Sudan to Atlanta and agents are trying to figure out what is his story.  The man is Gary Lester.  He is on his way to see a friend and has an antique bottle with him.  The customs agent, despite protests from Gary, picks up the bottle and drops it.  It breaks showering large beetles everywhere.  The bugs fly up into a swarm and direct their way straight into the agents mouth.

Zedd and John are in a park.  The energy in the park is making Zedd feel great.  John tells her that she has the ability to travel a psychic network.  She needs to let go a bit to see how far she can go.  Zedd starts seeing coins falling all around her.  She doesn’t know it, but this is her clue that an angel is on it’s way.  Manny stops by and once again talks a lot with out really saying anything.  When they get back to the cabin there’s been a break in.  John isn’t too worried about it, as there are many defenses to keep the intruders in the cabin.    Turns out the trespasser is Gary Lester and he is stuck in the zero gravity trap.  Lester is a friend of John’s that he hasn’t seen since Newcastle.

Once Gary is out of the trap he begins to tell John about the demon that he trapped in the Sudan.  He was wondering around in a haze when he came across a man with containment markings all over his face.  Lester knew someone had trapped a demon inside this man.  Without knowing who or why, Lester decides to help the man and exorcise the demon.  Lester does this successfully and was bringing it to John when it was released in the airport.

Speaking of the airport that agent is running around crazily stuffing his face with any food he can find.  He ultimately reaches into the hot fryer and pulls out some french fries.  The mans body can take no more and he dies, causing the demon to flee and find another host.

John is getting together his gear to trap this demon.  He has etched the Seal of Solomon onto a glass bottle.  He also has this gadget called the Ring of Solomon.  He has lots of interesting artifacts to help him fight evil.  Gary wants to come and help but John refuses to let him.  The demon has made it to tv and a grocery store in Atlanta.  We find out it’s a hunger demon.  John is off.  John arrives at the store and manages to find out the demon has hopped into a meat delivery guy.  The logo of the company?  A pig and cow dancing together.  That leads John to the meat packing place.  The demon is going through meat and people, fast.  Inside a meat locker John exorcises the demon.  The demon is too strong for the glass bottle that Constantine has prepared to trap it.  Constantine get’s out of that room quick and locks the bugs in there.  He heads back to the cabin to regroup.

While John is off to fight the demon, Zedd and Gary have a chat.  Zedd tries to find out more about Newcastle and Astra.  She doesn’t get too much information when Gary cramps up and looks like he’s going to fall.  Zedd grabs his arm and immediately sees all of Gary’s suffering and pain.  It really wipes her out.

When Zedd was seeing Gary’s memories she drew some pictures of the man who had contained the demon. John took those pictures to a Shaman to find out how to stop it.  The Shaman and John must have a shared vision.  They both eat something that is an “acquired taste” according to the Shaman.  They have this super trippy vision and now John knows what he has to do.

At the cabin Gary is determined to help John.  Zedd tries to stop him from leaving.  Gary grabs on to Zedd with both hands and holds on significantly longer than the first time.  Zedd collapses to the floor and is wiped out.  When John comes back he is pissed at Gary.  Zedd tries to convince him that people change.  John won’t have any of it.  He goes off to find Gary.

John finds him right where he told Zedd he would be.  Attempting to buy drugs under a bridge.  John and Gary go to a bar.  Gary tells John that in Newcastle he was high and when stuff started going down, he hid under a bed upstairs.  Surprisingly John doesn’t punch him in the face right then.  He tells him it wasn’t his fault.  That he never should have had Gary there in the first place.  Constantine says he wants Gary’s help to fight this hunger demon.

John has Gary help him steal the Kusa knife from the museum.  Manny shows up and asks John if he really wants to do this.  I’m starting to have a feeling John has more in store for Gary than just getting the knife.  The boys follow the demon to the Fox Theater.  John finally tells Gary that the only way to stop this demon is a human sacrifice.  Gary was surprised but understanding of the situation.  Gary feels that in this way, he can atone for some of the others things he has done.  At least John doesn’t cut out Gary’s tongue.  He does have to carve the containment markings in his friends face though.  When the demon is contained John brings Gary back to the cabin.  Zedd is pissed.  She can’t believe that John sacrificed him.  John told her that this is how it goes.  People around him die and if she doesn’t like it, she can go.  Zedd helps John get Gary inside and into a room downstairs.  Gary is going through a lot of pain, his body writhing and contorting.  John is holding his hand, and never lets go.  Manny appears and sits with them.  This is the first time I’ve felt that Manny cares about the pain John is going through.  I’m enjoying this series.  I know we have the greater story of this Darkness that’s coming.  I’m not too worried about it yet.  I’m sure they’ll throw some more information out here and there.  I like the hunting a new evil each week and finding out more about Constantine, Zedd and Chas that way.
