Constantine S1E3 “The Devil’s Vinyl” Recap

Constantine (NBC) Comments Off on Constantine S1E3 “The Devil’s Vinyl” Recap

I am really digging this show.  The latest episode had me hearing creepy whispers during nap time at work today. Let’s begin.

Moonrise Studios, Chicago, IL.  A blond woman enters the abandoned and decrepit studio.  Dead animals of all shapes and sizes and strewn about the rooms.  There is an ominous symbol painted on the wall.  The woman is freaked out but she is looking for something.  She takes a brick out of the wall and removes what was behind the brick.  A Holy Bible.  She flips through the book and finds an old album wrapped in a cloth.  It’s very around the album, never a good sign.  She flips open the cloth and sees the album is by Willie Cole.  Sounds like a good ol’ blues record.  The woman takes the record and leaves Moonrise Studios.

The blond takes the album to another studio.  This one currently in use.  She wants Bernie to take a look at the album to make sure it’s the real deal.  She warns him repeatedly to not listen to it.  Bernie says yeah, yeah and puts the album on with the sound off.  He watches the sound waves on a screen.  The woman receives a call from her daughter.  While she takes the call in the other room the temptation to listen is too great for Bernie.  He puts the headphones on and gives it a go.  It starts off as some really well played blues.  Just when you think everything is ok it changes from music to screams and other awful sounds.  Bernie starts to scream and tries to rip the head phones off.  They appear to be frozen to his head.  He pulls them off taking some skin and hair with them.  Bernie is screaming, don’t make me do it.  He grabs a pointed object from the table and stabs himself in the ear.  The vinyl and record player are covered in frost.

Cut to the cabin in the woods.  Zedd is sitting in her car outside.  Despite John’s attempt to evade Zedd she has found him.  Chas takes her inside to say hi to his “satanic majesty”.  Going in the cabin we hear I Wanna Be Sedated by The Ramones.  John is covered in what looks like blood, jumping around saying some crazy stuff.  He certainly looks like something satanic.  Apparently John is trying to learn a spell.  Chas and John are giving Zedd the run down on the supernatural safe house.  They come to the map and Zedd tries to get a hit on Bernie’s death.  She smells jasmine and feels very cold.  They are off to Chicago.  John tells Chas he’s still not sure if he trusts Zedd, but it’s better to keep her close until he figures her out.

They hit a morgue in the south side of Chicago.  John shows Zedd in his bag of tricks he has some nails from the coffin of St. Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of lost items.  If you place these magnetized nails in two separate places they will be drawn to each other.  John wonders how they will get into the morgue.  Zedd conveniently bumps into an employee in the parking lot and gets his badge.  It is handy to be a pick pocket.  In the morgue John tells Zedd that Bernie was a good friend.  He handled the band the Mucus Membranes which is a punk band that Constantine fronted.  John has Zedd pour blood on the floor and he lights the fingers of a Hand of Glory.  This will allow him to talk to the dead as long as the candles burn.  While John only wants to talk to Bernie all of the bodies in the morgue start bouncing around.  It’s like crazy town in there.  All John gets out of Bernie is the voice, acetate so cold and Moonrise.

Zedd is quite handy and they quickly find out that Marcus Mooney was owner of Moonrise Records.  They head over to the nursing home where Mooney currently resides.  On their way into the home Constantine shows us another one of his tricks.  A playing card that is enchanted to take on the appearance of whatever it’s holder requires.  Marcus explains that Willie Cole was a Memphis blues man.  Legend has it that he sold his soul for a successful music career.  When Willie was recording the acetate, the voice of the deceiver was heard and things started going nuts.  Willie was blown to bits and the acetate was cursed.  Marcus heard the whispers and voices and tried many times to destroy it.  When it became obvious that was impossible he hid it away and hoped it would never be found.  Recently a P.I. came to see Marcus and wanted to buy it.  He refused but caught the name on the check of the interested party.  It was Ian Fell.  Manny comes and releases Marcus from this life.  Constantine wants to know what’s the big deal about souls anyway.  A soul is the purest expression of God’s love.  Every time a dark force takes a soul, it is like they are exacting revenge against God.

Zedd and John bust into the Fell home.  They find out that Ian doesn’t know anything about the deal.  His wife Jasmine is the one who sold her soul to save Ian’s life.  He had cancer.  Anton, a soul broker, caught Jasmine at a time of weakness in the hospital.  Jasmine shows John the contract.  There were four seals on it.  The first one faded when Bernie listened.  The second one faded when the daughter listened to the acetate.  Lucky for her, they stopped it before any damage was done.  When all the seals are gone, the First of the Fallen will return to claim his prize.  The prize being Jasmine’s soul.  They are running out of time.  John puts one of his nails on Jasmine and he heads out to find Anton.

John finds out that Anton is small potatoes.  Papa Midnite is the one who wants the acetate.  Papa Midnite is, according to the Hellblazer comics is an immortal mob boss, business man and voodoo practitioner.  The acetate would be a type of get out of jail free card for him.  John is a bit cocky and gets knocked out by Papa Midnite’s goons.  Papa Midnite chains John up with copper.  Apparently copper is immune to the type of magic that John uses.  Then he injects John with heparin, an anticoagulant.  Midnite cuts Johns arm and tell him it will take four hours for him to bleed out.  He places a bottle of pharma dose vitamin K nearby.  This will help John’s blood to clot, and save his life.  If he can get to it.  After Midnite leaves a homeless man comes up to John.  John asks for his help but the man is reluctant.  Then the man turns into the angel Manny.  Manny tells him he can’t help him and that John better hurry up and get out of this.  John calls him a “celestial wank” and Manny disappears.  The homeless man starts to steal Johns shoes.  John tells him that he has something for him in his pocket, if the guy will get him loose.  The man goes in his pocket and the playing card turns into a platinum credit card.  The homeless man likes this and it looks like John’s plan may have worked.  Then the homeless man turns around ready to kill John.  He says if John is alive, he can’t use the card.  Huge backfire.  Zedd shows up just in time to save John.  She found him because of the nail.  Nice.

They find out that the two goons couldn’t help but follow the acetate’s instructions.  This is a demonic energy hungry for blood.  They have hit a club and there is complete carnage.  Chas shows up and now the three of them are trying to determine the acetates next move.  Zedd is getting the run down from the deaf busboy when she sees a white tiger.  Tiger Radio and Scott University.  They need to move fast.  Chas is loving Zedd but it’s driving Constantine crazy that she is on fire.

When they reach the radio station Chas and Zedd try to disable the antennae from the outside.  Constantine puts on headphones, says, “Give me some juice Johnny” and heads into the chaos of the studio.  People are beating each other.  Trying to kill each other.  The two thugs are in the station holding a gun on the crowd and playing the record.  Constantine pushes through the mob but his headphones get ripped out.  He becomes incapacitated by the acetate.  John’s ears are bleeding and he is writhing on the floor.  Papa Midnite comes in, wanting to recover his acetate.  He is not happy with all of the destruction the thugs have created.  He shoots out the speakers so the people can escape.  One of those people is Constantine.  John tells Midnite he can’t let him take that acetate.  Midnite heads to the control room when Constantine begins the exorcism.  The demons are expelled and the thugs explode.  There is a huge hole in the floor that looks like it leads straight to hell.  Midnite doesn’t get the acetate or Constantine.  John hasn’t made any friends here.

John has brought Anton back to the Fell home.  He can get Jasmine out of her contract, but it will give Ian back his cancer.  Ian says that’s cool, I can fight the cancer.  To dissolve the contract, Anton has to eat it.  Chew it up and swallow it.  Anton doesn’t want to break this deal because his higher ups will be pissed.  Chas and Constantine make him do it.  As the episode ends, Papa Midnite is burning a voodoo doll of Constantine.

Midnite’s thugs come to the mansion for the acetate.  Despite warnings from Zedd to not touch the acetate the thugs are weak and overcome by the evil.  They start to go batshit crazy.  The acetate just likes blood.
