Heddwich, Pennsylvania. The miners in town have just gotten off work. Filthy and tired they all head home. Lannis is a supervisor who has had a bad night. More men threatened to quit. They keep hearing sounds in the mine. Lannis’ wife cringes as he walks by, expecting to be hit or shouted at. Lannis takes the liquor bottle into the bathroom with him and begins to clean up for dinner. He steps into the shower and is rinsing off the coal dust and dirt. His eyes are closed but we see the water turn from clean to a muddy mess. Lannis opens his eyes and the water stops. While he is looking at the shower head, trying to figure out what has happened, fire bursts from the pipe. The shower and Lannis are engulfed in flames.
Constantine notices on the map, the dot on Heddwich, PA is wet. He is heading there alone. Chas can’t help because there is still a warrant for him in Pennsylvania. He apparently derailed a train trying to get rid of a succubus. Constantine is standing on the street in Heddwich watching a funeral procession. The girl we saw at the end of the last episode is drawing him in the present. It’s making her crazy not knowing who this man is or why he is encompassing her thoughts. She gathers up some of her drawings to throw away and heads down to the street. Constantine turns a corner and they bump into each other. She tells him how she dreams about him and can’t stop thinking of him. Constantine thinks she’s a con woman and makes his exit. He is kind of right because she stole his wallet.
Constantine goes into a bar and talks to some locals trying to get information about Lannis’ death. He orders a beer and talks to a man at the bar. There have been nine other deaths this year in the mine. Miners are also complaining that there are knocking noises coming from the walls in the mine. He finds out the mine is closed for the funeral so he heads over there.
Causing a distraction for the lone guard on duty, Constantine heads down into the mine. Something is following him just under the surface of the rock. Constantine takes a pick and “knocks” three times. Massive pounding answers him, shaking the mine and showering down dust and rocks.
Constantine brings a frozen dinner to the widow’s house and places it on the table among the homemade casseroles and salads. He sneaks into the “family only” area of the home to get a look at the shower head. He takes some black goo from inside it. The widow finds him in the bathroom. He tells her he is a reporter. She tells him a story of how a Romany girl meets a boy and he says he’s rich and wants to marry her and give her everything she wants. Instead she’s ended up with this. She begins to flirt with Constantine and it’s getting awkward. When Constantine tries to excuse himself, she gets offended and kicks him out. The miners rally behind one of their own and give him a bit of a beat down. Constantine tells the mine president that he has a not so natural disaster happening here and they need to stop the mining. Not surprisingly, the president ignores the warning.
The girl is waiting for Constantine in his room. He stays in the honeymoon suite. He said there’s more room and a good vibe. The girl’s name is Zed Martin. Constantine wanted to know who is stalking him so he went through her trash. Zed gives him his wallet back but the cash is missing. Zed says she has visions and feelings she can’t control sometimes. Constantine doesn’t want anything to do with this. He always tends to deal with the situation at hand. He doesn’t go looking for extra information. He tries to lead Zed out of his room but she grabs his arm. She can feel the loneliness, pain and desperation that motivates him. This vision gives Constantine and idea. He helps Zed to get into a trance and pours some black goo into her hand. She sees the fire and a tall cross. Constantine tells her he needs to clean up and takes off out the bathroom window.
The cross is in front of St. Asaph’s church. The church is abandoned and vandalized. When Constantine steps in he finds two teenagers having sex in the front pew. He tells them to go home, but not before berating them for going at it in a church. Constantine does a ritual that shows him the demon. Now he knows what he’s up against.
Zed goes to the bar to try to find Constantine. She asks the man at the bar if he’s seen an Englishman in a trench coat. The man asks Zed if she was left with the guys bar tab too? I was wondering how Constantine was going to pay for that pint earlier. Zed finds out that the man is the former priest of St. Asaph. He lost hope when his son was killed in a mining accident. Zed finds Constantine at her apartment. Constantine gives her a basic rundown of what he does. He doesn’t want her to help because everyone who works with him dies. Constantine and Zed have a habit of getting very close when they speak. I kept waiting for the kiss. Lots of sexual tension. I think all the stress has gotten to Constantine and he could use some fun. No time for fun now. The mine has collapsed and the sirens are going off.
Constantine is talking to the son of the mine president in his van. Turns out there was knocking right before the collapse and it has been happening for some time. When Constantine tries to warn him of the unauthorized digging the van doors lock and it starts to fill up with muddy water. Hands come out of the water and pull Constantine and the other man under the water and begin choking them. Zed gets the door open but it’s too late for the mining boss. He is dead.
Constantine tells Zed the spirit is called a coblynau. They actually make these noises to protect the miners. The coblynau is trying to warn the miners to stop digging so deep. Something else however is forcing the evil to the surface. Constantine is teaching Zed how to control and use her visions. He sits her on the priests’ chair and she sees a campground. She and Constantine head there.
Constantine is sure the priest is the one who conjured the demon for revenge of his son’s death. The pastor says no way. His faith isn’t strong enough. He then points out that all the men that have died above ground, are bosses. There is one left. The mine president takes his son into the mine. The spirit appears and begins attacking them. Constantine and Zed arrive. Zed starts painting a symbol on the wall. Constantine says an incantation and sends the spirit off. He reminded the coblynau that they are protectors of the miners and the coblynau left. Constantine begins plans for blowing up the mine.
Zed brings the priest to push the button and blow up the front of the mine. If they really wanted to, the town could begin digging again, but I think they’ve learned their lesson. Now Constantine needs to stop who conjured the evil to do the killing. It’s Lannis’ wife. She has gypsy blood and used that to help her raise the demons, she sics them on Constantine. He has just enough time to summon her dead husbands spirit to take her and drag her to hell.
Zed is waiting for him in his room. Once again, Constantine tells her it is not a job for her. She spends her life running any way, so she is sticking around.
This was a great episode. It reminds me of Supernatural in the early seasons. Constantine has a main goal, but along the way he fights as many demons and evil creatures as he can. Looking forward to next week.
