The following article contains spoilers.
The New 52 had The Joker missing from the Batman arc, and while some may argue that he was present in Detective Comics #1 where he is briefly seen getting his face torn clean off and The Dark Knight #1, where it turns out to be Clayface pretending to be the Joker.
We have gone the whole year without a definite idea on where The Joker has been, since the relaunch of the DC titles. Many were under the assumption he was dead. Harley Quinn, who is now in Suicide Squad, was told this over the summer story arc for the series; of course she knows her puddin’ as a man who can survive anything.
This month we realize how true that is, with The Joker making his big entrance in DC Universe’s “A Death in the Family” Batman crossover arc. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, the lead writer and artist for this year’s most anticipated story arc in DC since Night of the Owls told Newsarama in an interview July 02 of this year:
“When Scott told me that he’d written a Joker story for our next arc, I couldn’t contain my excitement,” added Capullo. “Talk about a dream come true! For me, the Joker is the ultimate rogue and the villain I most wanted to draw. I gotta tell you, after hearing what the story is about, this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare! A macabre and bloody, flesh crawling nightmare. We hope you’ll have the nerve to face what’s coming. Warning: It ain’t for the faint of heart!”
“Wait ’til you see him,” Snyder said. “Greg’s sketches literally gave me chills. Point blank: This is Joker like you’ve never seen him before. He has a mission. He has a secret. And he has a serious axe to grind with Batman. It isn’t going to be pretty, but it’s going to be a wild ride.”
‘A Death in the Family’ starts this month with Prelude’s in Batgirl #13, Catwoman #13, and the main story line appearing in this week’s Batman #13.
As a comic book aficionado and hardcore Batman fan, it is good to know that DC plans to keep the ‘Killing Joke’ story line will be kept within this new arc. Even though The Joker has been MIA for a whole year, and after all the interviews and press releases for the story so far, it paints the picture of a Joker who’s making up for lost time. So start off Halloween early, and pick up a copy or keep up with our coverage on the one of the favorite villains of DC. The vengeance he will unleash on the Bat-family, friends, and fellow villains of Gotham will be one that has been mentioned “is not for the faint of heart”.
