Books of Magic #1

Fans of magic and fans of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe will find something to love in Vertigo’s Books of Magic. Here’s our review of Books of Magic #1.

There once was a boy named Timothy Hunter. For the most part, he’s your average high school student who is dealing with the loss of his mother. The problem is that she didn’t die. She disappeared. This is the start of Books of Magic #1.

Very early on in the story we learn that Tim is offered a choice: He can live his average life or he can learn magic. Should he choose magic, he must understand that magic always has consequences and that the Powers That Be have determined that he will become the most powerful magician ever.

Naturally, he chooses magic.

Along the way Tim discovers that his new teacher Dr. Rose is watching out for him, guiding him to the first of many books that will explain how magic works. The pages are blank but the words will appear when it’s time. As Tim embarks on his magical journey, he becomes a target. Dr. Rose is there to watch over him, but that doesn’t mean he’s safe.

Books of Magic #1 is a fast-paced read with a story that engages the reader from the get go. It’s a very easy story to read compared to the other brand new Sandman Universe titles that revolve around complex history and narratives from the start. Writer Kat Howard is building a new world and we’re excited to see what she comes up with because she has a lot of room to do some very intriguing things within Gaiman’s Sandman Universe.
