Boardwalk Empire Recap: “Two Imposters”
Original Air Date (HBO): Sunday November 25, 2012
Season 2 Episode 11

As a weekly reviewer of your favorite show, it seems a lot of the time we all seem to get attached to the characters. Fantasize about them, believe in them, and emotionally invest in their journey whether we like it or not.  So in the last two weeks, it has been very hard for me to review Boardwalk Empire because they’ve been pretty hard to wrap my mind around the different plot explosions. But today, I am back to my civic duty of writing reviews for you wonderful folks.

Just a friendly reminder: This recap covers the characters you should pay attention to, and while other recaps give you the rundown of the episode from start to finish, I want to cut the fluff and take you to the milky caramel center. So before we enter let me remind everyone, just so ya won’t forget, that the following recap contains spoilers (i.e: info about the episode that you may not want to know before watching).

Our top-contenders for the week are the gents: Richard Harrow, Nucky Thompson, and Chalky White

We are brought back into the fold, a few hours after Owen Slater’s body has been in Nucky’s house, and he has been rather busy in that time. As his family, yes this includes Margaret, have been ushered away to safety Nucky gets to show us why he is one bad a** mother***!  A good percentage of this season he has had other people do his dirty work, but today he becomes a soldier. The first battle taking place in his own home. Nucky  & his shotgun, by all means a demure weapon, but very effective.  Gyp, of course, is trying to hit Nucky where it hurts and wants to make his stay in Atlantic City permanent, so no place and no one is safe especially with a bounty of $25,000 on Nucky’s head (dead or alive).

With nowhere to go, Nucky runs to Chalky White’s place seeking medical help for Eddie and refuge from Gyp.

Chalky realizes the gravity of Eddie’s injuries and forces his future son-in-law Samuel, a medical student, to treat Eddie’s bullet wound.  At the same time, Gyp and crew descend on Chalky’s turf with armed men. Gyp is convinced that Nucky is inside, offers Chalky $25,000 to give Nucky up, but Chalky protects Nucky, telling Gyp he hasn’t seen Nucky for three weeks. When he returns to the shack, Chalky tells Nucky that for his help in the matter, he needs to help him build a colored nightclub where Babette’s used to be. Instead of being a complete ass about the ‘color line’, Nucky agrees to the terms.

Nucky and Chalky, sneak off in the night, as they are about to cross the borderline of the town another attempt is made by some strangers to collect on Gyp’s bounty.  But they’re killed by Nucky, Chalky and Purnsley.  At this point, Nucky realizes there is no point in running and declares he is not leaving Atlantic City, and so they hideout. The best line from this interaction between Nucky & Chalky, really shows where they’ve come despite their recent absence in each other’s lives. Like two soldiers-in-arms. “I guess you’ll have to make new friends,” Nucky sighs. “Too old for that now,” Chalky lobs back.

Chalky has been one of the few characters in the show to be one of the prize players in the fold to finally be given a bigger spotlight and growth. He has a plan, knows how to get what he wants, and won’t give up ’till he does. His interactions with Nucky this past episode, where ones to be put a close eye on ’cause if everyone can manage to get out of this alive it’ll play an important role Season 4.

Gillian is Captain of ‘Crazy Lady’ and as she snoops around in Richard’s life it bothers her more and more that he is having a love affair.  She, in a power trip, has Gyp’s goons escourt Richard out of the premises when she finds out that Richard was  getting her grandson Tommy ready for “a walk around the grounds.”, only to discover Harrow was really taking him to Julia’  (his lover) house. Why is this imporant? The guns…

Yup. He is pissed, and someone, who despite recent happy moments is about to go postal over being taken away from the one person he cares about the most.

After all the craziness, we end the episode with the entrance of Al Capone. “We’ve been on the road for 18 hours,” says Capone, grinning with lethal intent. “I need a bed, a bath and you and me need to sit down and talk about who dies.”

Place your bets, who will die in this week’s finale!?!
