Season 2 Episode 9

Being Disillusioned

Ever hold onto the past so tightly that you can’t see the present? Your vision becomes blurred with the false illusion of reality. You see only what you want to see. Change is unavoidable and you find yourself tripping over it because in the past, these obstacles weren’t there. People whom we’ve long admired aren’t immune from change either, and so there we are…stumbling in the present blindfolded by our desire to grip onto what we once were.

Meat-sicle

Aidan recovers the skinless body of Henry. Suren had torturously removed all of his skin as payment for his crimes in the past so that he may move forth and be accepted once again in Boston. Without anywhere safe to go and recover from these injuries, Aidan must sway Josh to invite Henry in to the home. Josh allows him in, but is disgusted by Henry’s horrid condition. The only way to properly nourish and heal Henry’s body is for him to feed on blood. The fastest way to do it is with human blood. Aidan ventures out and finds two easily manipulated young women. He invites them back to his place and hypnotizes them into believing that they are attracted to Henry. They buy into it and allow Henry to snack on their blood.

While patiently supervising Henry’s medicinal tryst, Aidan begins reflecting on the past when they were both soldiers in France during WW1. He remembers watching Henry as a mortal human medic, struggling to save his injured comrades. Henry was innocent and genuine. Aidan had been shot over a dozen times and was expected to die, so Henry was ordered not to waste any morphine on him while he extracted the bullets from Aidan’s body. Henry carefully removed the bullets and was amazed by Aidan’s suspiciously speedy recovery.

The two quickly bonded and Henry had admitted that he had never killed a person, but always wondered how it felt. Only wondered because it was something he would never do. Aidan didn’t really know how to answer that, but grew fond of Henry’s compassionate disposition. One of the patients was clever enough to deduce that Aidan was a vampire and tried staking him, but Henry shielded him and was stabbed instead. Aidan’s loving admiration for Henry caused him to not want to see this sweet soul leave this earth…and so he damned him with the gift of eternal life as a vampire. And now, as he looks upon the monster that he created, it seems as though a twinge of guilt overcomes him.

Aidan had only wanted Henry to take a little blood from each lady, but their trance has been broken and they realize what is going on. Before their screams flood the neighborhood, Aidan and Henry kill them. The next day, Josh returns home and introduces himself again to Henry. When Henry explains he already met him yesterday, Josh confronts Aidan about how he healed so quickly. Josh isn’t stupid. He is disgusted that Aidan would bring this kind of brutality into their sacred home.

Just Friends

Josh and Julia are now able to tolerate each other’s presence at work now, after they both discussed the past and felt some closure last week. Josh can’t believe his eyes when he sees his old friend Stu staring at him and Julia. Stu is his old buddy that died by being attacked by the werewolf the same night that Josh was attacked and bit. Stu confesses that he was pissed and jealous of Josh for surviving the attack, but had heard through the ghost-grapevine that Josh is now a werewolf. The two reminisce and Josh ultimately discloses that he is over Julia and has no intention in pursuing her again. Stu enthusiastically agrees with Josh’s decision.

Later that evening, Josh and Julia hang out together at the bar, but what Julia does not know is that their old friend Stu has tagged along. Josh and Julia struggle to overcome their awkward new friendship, but they succeed. Josh even discusses his relationship woes about Nora. Julia cannot hear or see Stu, but Josh is becoming annoyed by Stu’s constant reminders to not cross the line of flirting with Julia. When Julia admits that she is enjoying Josh’s company immensely, Josh decides its time for him to leave before things get inappropriate. Before Josh is able to get out the door he suddenly changes his mind. Josh and Julia are now back at her place and throw caution to the wind and furiously have sex. What we know, and what Julia does not, is that Stu has possessed Josh! When Josh awakens from the possession he discovers that he has bedded Julia. He dresses quickly and tells Stu to meet him outside. Stu explains that ever since they were kids he has been in love with Julia and he would give anything just to have her look at him the way she always looked at Josh. He took advantage of the situation. Stu has been following Julia and this is his unfinished business.

When Josh returns to Julia’s apartment, she is awake and ecstatic about being in Josh’s arms again. The lure of their past love is undeniable and Josh gives in by kissing her. It seems as though a love triangle is forming and Josh’s heart is headed for disaster.

How Will I Know?

Sally must face a troubling fork in the road: Become a reaper, or be extinguished from any further existence. Sally meets with Reaper in a park so that she may shred on the next ghost. This time it is her friend Walter, a ghost she knows through a ghost support group for recovering body possessors. He pleads for her to spare him, but after much convincing from Reaper, she tries her hand at shredding. Reaper must finish him off, but Sally is now even more confused. She worries that she won’t be able to tell when a ghost is lying or telling the truth. Reaper reassures her that she will know.

Sally returns home and is startled to see Boner, a ghost that she was told by Reaper, was shredded by Stevie. Boner is looking for Stevie. She now knows that Reaper is not telling the truth and is evil. Filled with fear and regret, Sally seeks advice from her human friend Zoey. Sally wants to know how to defeat Reaper. She follows Zoey’s advice and decides to attend the ghost support group meeting for some suggestions. When Sally arrives she sees that the place has been torn apart and Zoey screams at her telling her that it is all her fault. The entire ghost support group had been shredded. Sally returns home but is quickly confronted by her ghost friend Nick. He begs her to listen to him. Nick tells her that there is no Reaper and that she has become deranged. Sally’s recollection sharpens a bit and we see that she was actually the one responsible for all of the recent ghost busting. Aidan and Josh arrive home just in time to see Sally lose control and ruthlessly shred Nick. She is now after them! Aidan grabs the iron stoker and knocks her out. When she wakes up she finds that her two roommates have enclosed her in a circle of salt. Josh nearly gives in to her sad cries to let her out, but Aidan stops him. Sally is not herself anymore. She seems to have been afflicted by a demon.

Quotable Quotes:

Aidan narrating:  “The bonds you form with some people will make you look past anything…Ignore what they’ve become. Friends, parents, mentors…we hold on to that idealized image of them even if it’s an illusion. Because if you can’t believe in them, what does that say about us?”

Josh to Stu: “I’m huge in Ithaca.”

Julia to Josh: “You realize you just cried on the shoulder of the woman you dumped about the woman who dumped you.”

Sally to Aidan: “Uh-uh! I’m not babysitting the meat-sicle.”
