Tough Love

Nothing is harder than dishing out tough love to someone you care about, but it must be done when absolutely necessary. This week Sally faces the harsh truth about what she can be capable of as shown by the Reaper… Josh delivers much needed, but painful closure and explanation to a loved one… and Aidan must endure the inevitable wrath that has built up for nearly a century in order to settle a debilitating dispute.

Sheridan

After waiting an excruciatingly long week wracked with the fear of getting reaped at any moment, Reaper shows up in front of Sally. He announces that he has found a loophole that will avoid her from becoming reaped. He offers her to take over his job, and be Reaper. Sally is stunned, but must give him an answer within the day. Of course she mulls it over with Aidan, who suggests to her that she kill the Reaper. Sounds like a great idea so Sally seeks out her old pal Stevie for advice on how to “shred” a ghost. He gives directions on how to do it, but highly advises against it because it will make her dark and other ghosts will be afraid of her…just as happened to him ever since he shredded Dylan to save her.

Later that evening, Reaper arrives and Sally pounces on him and shreds him…or so she thinks. He comes back and asks her how it felt to shred him. Tearfully, Sally admits that she quite enjoyed the rush. Reaper explains to Sally that reaping is necessary for balance. An added benefit of this job is constant travel and purpose. He believes that Sally was meant to be a reaper. Sally cannot deny the emptiness of her existence since her untimely death, but what strikes her more than anything is the promise of purpose and power that come with the responsibility of being Reaper.

She agrees to train with Reaper. He tests her ability by taking her to Stevie. Reaper discloses to Sally that Stevie has been lying to her and that he is a dark ghost. Stevie must be reaped because he has been shredding ghosts and must be stopped. Sally approaches Stevie to question him about the ghost he shredded. After much denial he finally admits to her that the ghosts he shredded deserved it and that Sally was acting crazy. Sally is helpless to save Stevie and watches as Reaper reaps him. Reaper informs Sally that she is nearly ready to take his job, an idea that disturbs Sally because she isn’t comfortable with her willingness to reap.

Closure

Josh has been wallowing in his own stench of self-pity ever since his break up with Nora last week. He gets a pleasant surprise when his sister, Emily, arrives to shake him out of his funk. Aidan had called her and alerted her to Josh’s depression. What better way to shake things off than by getting smashed? Josh agrees to join up with her later that evening at a bar, but when he arrives much earlier than anticipated, he finds Emily in the company of Julia…his ex-girlfriend that had a fling with Aidan a few months ago. Tension is high, but the three of them are able to tolerate each other. Josh discovers that Emily and Julia bonded a few years ago after the sudden disappearance of Josh. Emily has had a few drinks too many and they must leave the bar.

The three of them arrive at Julia’s apartment. Josh and Julia share a tender moment as they remember a similar situation of tending to a very drunk Emily at her prom several years ago. Josh looks around Julia’s apartment and is overwhelmed by his emotions. He tells Julia that he is proud of what she has accomplished. Julia confides that she came to Boston hoping to reconnect with him. He then forcefully admits to her that ever since he was attacked in the woods years ago, the rage within him would have brought harm to her. He was trying to protect her from him. They both decide that it would be best if he left before the discussion carried on any further.

The next day, Emily and Josh meet up and they discuss what had transpired the night before. Emily says that even in her drunken stupor she had picked up on the sparks between him and Julia. Josh tells her he has no intentions with Julia, but is glad that she is safe from him and that he is thankful that the whole night happened. The evening seemed to offer him some closure.

Be Careful Who You Screw Over

The vampire orphans are increasingly becoming sloppier and sloppier with their kills. Too much energy has been focused on covering up wolf crimes according to Suren, and so she orders for the immediate culling of the orphans. When Aidan protests, Suren informs him that Mother intends to pay Boston a visit. She also tells him that she told Mother that they had already killed off the orphans. Time is of the essence, and Aidan knows it.

Aidan meets with Henry and tells him that he wants him to gather all of the orphans in the safe house where Henry resides. It is owned by a human named Mr. Doris that has invited orphans in. He tells Henry that he will return later that night with a plan that will save all of the orphans from being culled.

When Aidan returns that night, all orphans have gathered inside and Aidan reveals his plan for their escape. He promises them that a transport is on its way to take them all to Baltimore where they can live without politics and start over with his friend that has offered them a new life. Aidan carefully watches the clock and takes Henry outside just as the clock strikes 11pm. It is at this moment that on the other side of town, Mr. Doris has been secretly whisked off to meet with Suren. She offers him $200,000 for the deed to his house, and he agrees to sell it. The papers that were previously prepared are signed, and the new owner is a human man in cahoots with Suren. He now has the power to uninvited the vampires inside of the house. We become aware of this elaborate plan to quickly exterminate all of the orphans in an instant at precisely 11pm. Uninvited vampires explode into dust when they have entered a human house without being invited.

Henry is shocked when he realizes that Aidan had set the orphans up, but Aidan reminds them they were doomed anyways. Aidan tells Henry that he told Suren that in exchange for freedom, Henry would gather the orphans to be culled. It was the only way Aidan knew how to save Henry. He tells Henry to leave, and that he has complete freedom now, but Henry refuses. Henry would rather die than not be accepted back in Boston. Henry must face Suren.

Aidan brings Henry to Suren. He tells her to accept him, or kill him. Suren says that in order to stay he must pay a heavy price to Mother for being the cause of the human massacre that nearly exposed them 80 years ago. Suren also seeks her own price for him causing her to be grounded for the past 80 years. She decides that she will skin Henry alive with a knife. This won’t kill him, but it will be torture and painful. He will heal. Henry agrees to do it, but Aidan warns Suren that he better live because Henry is his blood. Aidan cannot bare to watch, and leaves, only to hear the sounds of Henry screaming in agony.

Quotable Quotes:

Aidan narrating:  “Even in the most hopeless battle, there is a moment when the tide can turn. The supplies make it through. Re enforcements crest the hill. Where there was no possibility of rescue, a way presents itself. But when help finally arrives, is it for you…or the enemy?”

Sally to Reaper: “I feel like an inmate on supernatural death row!”

Aidan to Sally: “Every monster has his or her own threshold for violence. But I’ll tell you one thing…If I was gonna kill anyone it’d be the Reaper. He wants to wipe you out, you take him down first.”

Sally to Reaper: “This whole time I’ve been dead, I’ve been desperate for a purpose. I’ve tried possessing…haunting…a boyfriend. Maybe I can do this. Be a Reaper.”
