Being Human (SyFy) Recap: “A monster, a real monster, doesn’t give a damn about the havoc it wreaks, the blood it spills.”

Episode: “All Out of Blood”
Original Air Date: Monday January 30, 2012
Season 2, Episode 3

This week’s episode dives deeply into the depths of the inhuman urges that motivate the darkest human desires. Aidan struggles with an unrelenting hunger to feed on ‘live’ blood, Sally sees an opportunity to possess something sacred, and Josh and Nora try to resist the innate instinct of the wolf within them.

Two Less Lonely People in the World

Aidan finds himself in the passionate clutches of a gorgeous woman named Julia. Although the intensity of sexual arousal stirs up his inner vampire killer instinct, he is able to control it with drinking bags of donor blood from the hospital he works at. Over the next few weeks the relationship develops, and Aidan invites Julia to his place. He pauses the encounter to run to the fridge for a quick blood snack and runs into Josh in the kitchen. Amused by the joint timing, Josh shares that he himself is about to ravish his girlfriend Nora. Josh declares, “Look at us. We’re just two dudes standing in their kitchen having a chat before bedding down their women.” To which Aidan sarcastically replies, “Ah, yeah…we’re living the dream.” The two part ways and rejoin their nocturnal relations. Nora surprises Josh with her heightened wolf senses and increased libido.

The next morning Aidan returns to the kitchen to find Nora, Josh, and Sally sitting at the table. Obviously annoyed, Sally asks “So what was with the bang off I had to listen to last night?” It is at this time that Julia descends from Aidan’s room to introduce herself, but discovers that there is no introduction necessary to Josh. Julia is Josh’s ex-fiancé. To make things worse, Julia is also their co-worker now at the hospital.

Lost In Love

Julia rushes out of the house, and Josh chases after her. He tries to explain to Julia that he ran out on her a long time ago for reasons she would not believe. He tells her that it was the best thing he could do to protect her. Julia expresses her feeling of abandonment with a hard slap to his face.

Aidan returns to work ready to quench his thirst but finds out that the hospital administration has picked up on the fact that several bags of blood have been stolen. Grappling with breaking things off with Julia, and having no access to his food source from the blood bank, Aidan resorts to the Blood Den. In a seedy part of town, Aidan pays $300 to feed from a ‘live’ donor. The undeniable euphoria of fresh, warm blood overcomes Aidan. He has been satiated, but will this be the end of the Aidan we have all come to love and adore?

Even the Nights are Better

Josh has arranged that he and Nora be locked in separate storage units right next to each other during their change. Josh asks Nora if he can videotape the change, to which Nora replies, “I will let a ghost lock me in a storage unit so that you can videotape me while I take my clothes off and turn into an animal. Yeah…that sounded as creepy as I thought it would.” Nora nearly let the inner wolf within overtake her. She admits to Josh that she remembers killing the vampire Hegeman, and also her ferocious feeling of resentment towards Josh for cursing her…but does not reveal the jealousy she feels of Julia being his ex-fiancé.

Here I Am

While visiting Josh and Aidan at work, the nursery catches Sally’s eye. As Sally studies the babies, a nurse tells her to get in line. Confused, Sally is shocked that the nurse is able to communicate with her. Sure enough, there is a line-up of other ghosts. They tell Sally that this nurse, Zoe, salts a barrier around the newborns so that they can’t become possessed by the wrong spirits. Intrigued by this revelation, Sally decides she will convince Zoe to help her reincarnate into a newborn. When Zoe turns down Sally’s request to help her out, Sally sneaks inside the nursery. Just as she attempts to possess an infant, the black entity that was released during her dream several weeks ago confronts her. Sally does the right thing and leaves the baby alone so that this dark mass does no harm to them both. Nurse Zoe applauds Sally’s actions and offers her help to figure out a way to stop this evil stalker.

Quotable Quotes:

Josh narrating:  “A monster, a real monster, doesn’t give a damn about the havoc it wreaks, the blood it spills.”

Sally to Aidan:  “When you say ‘enjoying each other’s company,’ that’s code for ‘tapping that ass’.”

Sally to Aidan:  “Let’s define binge. Am I going to come home and find bodies stacked like firewood?”
