The following contains spoilers for American Horror Story: Asylum
In an interview today, American Horror Story: Asylum co-creator and showrunner Ryan Murphy talked to Entertainment Weekly about last night’s shocking scene involving Dylan McDermott and… adult breastfeeding. Fans of the show might start to wonder if these shocking scenes are the beginning of an AHS tradition for McDermott, who holds the title for most shocking scene last season, in what many refer to as the “crybating” scene. And if you have to ask what that is, you haven’t seen it yet.
When asked if he purposefully tried to top himself, Murphy denied taking the previous season into consideration. “I never thought about topping it,” he said to EW.com. “I do think it’s shocking, but I think it’s incredibly moving but you don’t know it’s moving ’til the last scene. Like he’s so full of remorse and hatred and bile for things he thought he didn’t get that he actually did get. I was uncomfortable editing and watching it, which tells you something. I know Dylan loved going for it. I loved the pain of that episode. I think it was very moving.”
Murphy also revealed a little about what we can expect for the upcoming episodes of the show:
Well, the next one I really love is called “Continuum” and we did something that I’ve always wanted to do in a one hour format, which is there’s four acts and each act follows a different character and then it all dovetails together. It’s very novelistic and you really spend time with the characters. There’s a great Kit/Grace/Alma act, there’s a great Jessica and the Angel of Death act, there’s a great Paulson act. The next episode moves you forward from 1965 to 1969/1970.
He further explained we should have a few more answers about all this alien business, and why they seem to be specifically targeting Kit (or those who sleep with Kit). However, Murphy also said it’s in the nature of alien abductions to be mysterious and confusing, so if you’re looking for everything to be unwrapped and concretely revealed, beyond what the characters themselves guess happened, you might be disappointed in the end. “We talk about it in the next episode,” Murphy said, “at least we answer it from why our characters think they were.”
And the clues keep coming from Murphy on the theme of Season 3: “There’s another clue tonight and there’s a really big clue next week…last week the clue was very brief and this week is very brief. But yeah they’re in there.” This is after he mentioned, earlier in the interview, the inclusion of Philip Glass’ Candyman score, which makes you wonder if Murphy has an urban legend or two up his sleeve.
