A Farewell to 666 Park Avenue

by Jessica Grafer:

I wish I was here to discuss Jane’s plunge into the supernatural history of the Drake. Why was she there as a child? Why doesn’t she remember? Will all this sleuthing bring Jane closer to Detective Cooper? So many questions. Not unlike many other beloved shows, the powers that be have decided to yank the Drake and all it’s inhabitants off the air. Since learning of the cancellation I was at least looking forward to the remaining four episodes they have filmed. That won’t be happening any time soon. It’s been reported they’ll run them over the summer so…fingers crossed.

I’ve been trying to find out why they just pull shows like this. So much time and money have been put into the production, you’d think they’d want to run all the episodes. I put the question out on Twitter to someone whose knowledge about the television industry I’ve come to trust and depend on, Ted Linhart (@tedontv). This is his Twitter bio:

Ted Linhart

He often answers questions, and has been very handy whenever I’ve needed some information. According to Mr. Linhart, despite all the money they’ve put into production it is still sometimes cheaper to just put reruns on and pull the show immediately. I asked if there were a number of viewers that needed to be met to keep a show running. He said there isn’t a magic number.  Many factors affect the life of a show; network, time slot and lead in retention are just a few. I hopefully suggested that we would at least get some kind of closure from these last four episodes. That’s not very likely. While they were filming they probably had no idea the axe was coming. Some of you might have known all of this already, but it was new and interesting to me so I thought I’d share.

Bottom line is, the story of the Drake will be left unfinished. Maybe this summer we’ll get to meet Sasha and find out why she faked her death. Will Gavin’s love for his family overcome the pain of betrayal? What drives the Drake and gives it its power? Will Henry and Jane make it through all this? For that matter, what about Louise, Brian and Alexis? Alexis wants to stop this awful thing she’s started, but Brian can’t write without her. We all thought Laurel was helping Henry, but she’s the one who leaked Jane’s psych report.

Anyway, it was a great story. I’ll look forward to any little bit left they’ll give us. Thank you so much to all the people who worked on 666 Park Avenue. The actors, writers, crew, everyone. You poured your hearts into a great story. The viewers who followed you every week thank you for that.
