666 Park Avenue Recap: “Hypnos”
Original Air Date (ABC): Sunday December 2, 2012
Season 1 Episode 9

A fantastic episode!  This is just starting to get really good.  I’ve been waiting all week to see about this Maris person.  The only thing that left me disappointed was…well, let’s just get to the story.

Maris Elder is not only a spiritually advanced woman, she’s also a doctor of psychiatry.  Nice!  She should be able to help Jane out immensely.  Maris tells Jane she hasn’t been out of her apartment in 26 years.  She feels safer in there.  Maris takes Jane’s hand and sees flashes of her memories.  Jane is ready to get going but Maris tells her to come back in the morning.  She also tells her to forget about the “where” she went and think about “when”.

Henry is trying to be extra special nice to Jane. He tries to make her breakfast in bed and burns it.  Then Jane finds out he’s working from home for the day.  This is awfully sweet, but it kinda puts a wrench in Jane’s exploration plans.  Jane tells Henry she’s going to do laundry and runs off to see Maris.  While Jane is gone Henry receives a visit from Gavin.  Big things are afoot.  A councilman’s seat is opening up and Gavin has arranged a meet and greet with Philip Perez who has agreed to back Henry for the position.  Henry gets ready for the meeting later that day.

Tony and Olivia are still playing around with Shaw.  Trying to get him to bring Sasha to Olivia.  There isn’t any time with Gavin and Olivia together this episode.  So far they are playing at odds, until Olivia can get to the bottom of this Sasha business.  Gavin knows what’s going on however and sends Kandinsky to kill Shaw and bring Olivia back home.

Jane is back at Maris’s enjoying some “special” tea to relax her.  They are about to do the regressive hypnosis.  There is a gold clock that Jane focuses on while Maris tells her to relax.  Next things she knows she’s back in 1927.  October 28.  Jane is asked to sign a guest book for the party that is going on.  She signs her name, Jane Van Veen but people keep referring to her as Libby.  She’s at her grandmother Jocelyn’s birthday party.  Libby appears to be her babysitter.  Jocelyn is very fond of her.  Jocelyn and Libby go up to their apartment to find her doll Sally.  They go into Peter Kramers office where there is a bunch of occult stuff on his desk.  They get Sally and run out quickly as they here Kramer and someone else coming.  Jane sees Kramer hide a book behind a brick in the fireplace and then she is woken back up.  Maris tells her to come back after lunch.  When Jane is going back up in the elevator she sees Gavin.  Gavin is curious about her whereabouts because, although she is carrying a laundry basket she got on the elevator at the 2nd floor.  Gavin is going to be checking up on Jane.  Henry leaves to go to the meeting and Jane immediately calls Detective Cooper.  She’s asks him to come to the Drake to help her with something.

Gavin goes to Maris’s apartment.  He can’t come in because of the symbol on the door.  Gavin wants to know where Jane was when she went down the spiral stairs.  I’m surprised he doesn’t know.  There is a difference between Gavin’s powers and the powers of the Drake.  I think the Drake makes Gain more powerful.  He would still have power without it, but the Drake seems to be a huge energy cell.  Gavin doesn’t know all its secrets yet.  Maris tells Gavin she can’t tell him what she and Jane talked about.  Gavin wants to bargain with Maris.  Shockingly she agrees to a deal.  Maris wants to leave the Drake.  She wants to be able to walk out in one piece.  I’m afraid Gavin will have something happen to her after she leaves.  I can’t believe she’ll take this deal.

Cooper is at the Drake meeting with Jane.  He found out that Libby Frances Giffith died on October 28, 1927.  The exact same day that Jane went back to.  Jane wants Cooper to help her find the fireplace and whatever Kramer hid in there.  They bust down the wall and find Kramers journal.  There is some chemistry between Jane and Cooper.  It must be relaxing and freeing to be able to talk to someone else about everything and have them believe you.  I don’t see anything too bad yet, but I think Henry will get the wrong idea and this might cause problems.  Remember the way Henry looked when Jane was hugging Cooper at the hospital?

The meeting for Henry and Perez doesn’t happen.  Someone leaked Jane’s psych report to Perez and unless Henry dumps her, they can’t work together.  It’s a political nightmare to have a crazy wife/girlfriend.  Henry isn’t going to take this lying down.  First of all that report is confidential.  Who could’ve gotten that?  Henry contacts Laurel and wants her to find out who leaked the information.  He also wants something to use against Perez.  Laurel doesn’t find who leaked the psych report but she does find out that Perez didn’t pay some property taxes for a few years.  Henry has his dirt and he’s off.  He confronts Perez with it and they find a way to work together.  Perez meets with Gavin and tells him, Henry must have an enemy.  That report would’ve been extremely hard to get.  When Gavin places the red folder with Jane’s psych report in it on his desk, he notices it matches another red folder.  The folder Henry gave him with his press kit in it.  We know who both these folders come from…Laurel.  She really wants Henry to dump Jane.  Even at the cost of him getting ahead.

Jane takes Kramers journal and goes to see Maris.  Jane is hypnotized again and goes back to October 28th.  Kramer is telling Libby to get Jocelyn out of the Drake now.  Not to stop for anyone.  Libby tries but the doors are locked.  Men come looking for Jocelyn.  Libby and Jocelyn hide while the men question Kramer about his daughter.  Libby steps out to draw attention away from Jocelyn.  This was a big mistake.  Blood is blood one man says and they decide to use Libby instead of Jocelyn.  They take her downstairs and bind her to a chair.  There are candles and knives and a bunch of angry looking, scary men.  These are all parts of Jane’s memories.  Someone says to shut up Libby.  They can’t listen to her pleas for mercy any longer.  The knock her out.  Jane wakes up and tells Maris that they killed Libby that night.  Jocelyn is alive only because of Libby.  Maris tells Jane that her family has a dark legacy attached to the Drake.  As much as she tries to get away, her past and future seem to be tangled up in the Drake.  Jane asks if Gavin knows any of this.  At this point a black crow appears at the window.  Maris tells Jane she has to go, without answering the question.  I was a little disappointed.  I thought Maris would try to give Jane a little warning.

Shaw is messing with Olivia and Tony.  He almost escapes and Olivia has the gun on him.  She wants him to take her to Sasha now.  They arrive at an apartment building.  Olivia is going to go up alone to see Sasha.  Tony stays down to watch Shaw.  Kandinsky is also watching from a car on the same street.  Olivia gets up to the apartment but it’s pretty much empty except for a pot of red orchids by the window.  Olivia hears a shot and runs outside.  Shaw is on the ground bleeding out.  Shaw tried to make a run for it and Kandinsky shot him.  Olivia tries to get him to tell her where Sasha is, but he dies first.

Maris lets her bird fly free out the window of her apartment.  Then she takes a large ornate book off her shelf and prepares to walk downstairs.  She’s happy to be out of the apartment.  In the lobby she runs into Gavin.  She completes her end of the bargain, by giving Gavin the book.  She’s marked the page that he’ll be most interested in.  Gavin opens the book as Maris walks away and sees that Jane signed the guest book back in 1927.  Maris walks outside and to Gavin’s credit a piano doesn’t fall on her, a bus doesn’t hit her, nothing happens!  Maris walks a few steps away and then stops, bursting into a flock of white birds.  They fly up and around the Drake.

Jane is now seeing Libby in mirrors asking her for help.  Now that Maris is gone, how is Jane going to recover these memories?  This is the point I’m disappointed about.  If they had more time, Jane could keep exploring with Nona.  I hope this gets all worked out and we aren’t left wondering.

Gavin walks into a noisy, crowded bar.  He seems a bit out of his element.  At first I think he’s looking for Laurel, to have a talk with her about why she’s sabotaging Henry.  Gavin seems nervous though so I’m not sure.  He approaches the bar where a girl with dark hair sits.  Her hair is covering her face.  Gavin stands there a moment.  Not sure what to do.  Then he says, hello Sasha.  His beautiful daughter looks up at him.  Gavin looks so sad and nervous.  Despite all the bad he’s done he clearly loves his daughter and wants a relationship with her.  I wonder if he’ll get his wish.
