666 Park Avenue Recap: “Hero Complex”
Original Air Date (ABC): Sunday October 21, 2012
Season 1 Episode 4
Let me start off by saying this is my favorite episode of the season so far. Things finally start to crack a bit for Henry and Jane. Surprisingly, to me at least, Henry is the one who questions Gavin’s good intentions first. I thought Jane had the more down to earth head on her shoulders. Let’s get started.
We find poor Annie right where we left her. Beaten and tied up in her apartment. Kandinsky is furious. He had been under the radar for 20 years before Annie’s story came out. Annie of course tries to tell him she made it all up but he doesn’t believe her. Kandinsky pulls out a knife and tells Annie he’s going to cut one of her pretty eyes out. Annie breaks and spits out her editors name. Ned Shipley! He’s my source! Wow. Couldn’t she have thrown out a fake name? This is not going to bode well for Ned.
Henry gets an email from the councilman canceling his interview. Henry is obviously upset. He went through the extra motions and pushed hard to get in the councilman’s face and now he’s just blowing him off. Henry trips over the battered suitcase sitting on the floor. Jane tells him she got it from the hidden room. Although Henry is aggravated Jane calms him down the way a good girl friend would. The little ghost girl has taken to hiding under Henry and Jane’s bed. As she watches the lock on the suitcase moves.
Olivia stops by Jane’s apartment. She wants the thief out. A diamond brooch of hers has gone missing and this is the final straw. Private detectives, cameras, whatever Jane has to do to smoke the larcenist out. The lock on the suitcase moves again.
Nona is furiously cleaning the house. (It kinda looks a bit like my bedroom.) Ingrid her psychiatrist has come for a meeting. When Nona tells her that her grandmother isn’t home Ingrid is disappointed. It seems that Nona’s grandma is always out when she comes for a visit. Nona tells Ingrid that she thinks she’s cured and she doesn’t need the special visits anymore. Ingrid says that’s great but we should sit down with grandma too just to make sure. Nona kept a keepsake from Ingrid. Her Chanel sunglasses. Nona and Jane ride down in the elevator together. Jane comments on Nona’s cute sunglasses. When they reach the lobby Ingrid is there. She’s looking for her lost glasses. Jane quickly realizes they are the ones Nona had on and she has her thief. After Ingrid leaves Jane confronts Nona about the thefts. Nona says she doesn’t have her grandmothers necklace, but she might have some of the other missing items.
More great news for Henry. Gavin tells him that Henry’s office has him under investigation for his realty dealings. Specifically the Greenpoint Towers (formerly referred to by yours truly as the 3 Point Towers. Sorry about that. I really need a DVR!) Gavin says he just wants Henry to know and he hopes this doesn’t affect their relationship. Now Henry has this weighing on him as he heads to work. When he gets to work things do not get better. Henry is confronted by the Assistant District Attorney. They have been shadowing Gavin and have hundreds of pictures of Henry with him. Henry says he’s done nothing wrong, which is true but the pictures don’t look good. They want Henry to get them the files they need to prosecute Gavin or they will destroy his career. This obviously tears Henry up and he struggles with what to do.
Annie gets free and races to Ned’s house. She tries to call him but hears his phone ringing outside. She looks down and sees a bloody trail, leading to poor Ned in the trash. The great thing about this is that it looks like something written in a story. The knife is there. A trail of blood on a busy city street. It’s all surreal. Kandinsky calls Annie on the phone and tells the little liar that she’s next. Here’s where Gavin comes in. I was mistaken though. He didn’t rush to Annie’s aid. Gavin made Annie come to him for it. That’s the beauty of it. Gavin tells her, you wanted to change the world with your voice and now you’re doing it. Annie doesn’t want to anymore. I don’t think she’ll even want to write or read a book after this mess. Gavin says he can make Kandinsky go away for good, but Annie has to write one more piece for him. Annie doesn’t want to, but they other option is her body left in a bloody mess by Kandinsky and his murder bag. Annie opts to write the piece on the Planning Commission being corrupt by the mob. She submits the piece and can relax a bit. That is until a coworker points out the the mob will have the Commissioner Pike killed. Annie can’t handle being the cause of someone else’s death. She wants to stop the killing.
Henry meets with Gavin to tell him they need to cool it on the friendship stuff. Gavin tells Henry that Pike is just using him and that it will all blow over. Henry finally asks the $64,000 question. Why are you being so nice to Jane and I? We’re nobodies. Gavin said he sees something in them. Something good. Henry isn’t convinced, “At what point do you want me to start paying you back?” That kinda pisses Gavin off. This meeting doesn’t end on a good note. Olivia tells Gavin that maybe this plan with Henry might not work.
Ghost girl convinces Jane to put the suitcase away in the closet. Jane seems to have adjusted to seeing a little ghost girl really quickly. Jane goes to return Ingrid’s sunglasses and finds out some information about Nona. A year and a half ago her parents were killed in an accident. Now Nona lives with her grandmother. Ingrid says that maybe Jane can be a confidant for Nona.
Henry is seriously torn about what to do. He doesn’t want to lose his job but stealing the files is wrong. Henry goes for stealing the files. He gets the penthouse key and races up there after Olivia leaves. He downloads the Greenpoint Towers doc and sees and doc named for him and Jane. He downloads that one also. Olivia comes back and Henry runs down the fire escape. Seriously, runs. You can tell how scared he is. In his haste he has left the jump drive cover on Gavin’s desk.
Henry and Jane have a dinner party at the Mayor’s mansion tonight. Big deal right? Henry is trying to get out of going. This is something he’d totally get off on so it makes Jane curious. She thinks he’s just nervous. They ride down the elevator with Nona. Nona assumes Jane has told Henry that she’s the thief. Actually, no. Way to go Nona. At least now Nona knows she can try to trust Jane. Maybe she has a friend in her. As they step out Nona trips and grabs onto Henry. I must admit, I thought she was going to steal his watch. I know, but old habits and all that. She doesn’t take the watch but she sees a vision. Henry on the floor. A man with a compass tattoo and a gun. Nona tells Jane to keep Henry away from the man with the compass tattoo. He has a gun and he’s going to hurt Henry. Jane wants to know what she’s talking about but Nona says ominously, “Just do it”.
Tony is delivering packages to the tenants. He comes across Henry and Jane apartment. He hears the bells on the suitcase. In kind of a trance he goes into the apartment. Walks straight to the closet where the suitcase is takes it out and opens it. A black mist spills out of the satchel. The black mist swirls around and seems to take part of a human form as it stares Tony in the face. Tony is still in the trance-like state. The ghost girl is under the bed and she is terrified. After all this Tony is back outside the apartment. The door is closed and locked. Tony is in a daze. He kind of shakes his head and continues delivering the packages.
At the Mayor’s party Olivia tells Henry he’s got some nerve to show his face. Jane is stunned. She has no idea why Olivia would be so pissed. Henry fills her in before he goes to talk to Commissioner Pike. Henry tells Pike he’s not giving him the files. He hasn’t done anything wrong and he’s not going to start now. Henry had also told Gavin, when confronted with the top of his jump drive that he’s not going to use the files or read them. Isn’t he a little bit curious what the file about he and Jane said? I would have to throw the drive away completely or it’d eat me up. Gavin takes this news a lot better than the commissioner. Pike fires Henry. On the other side of the room a server bumps into Jane. Oops. She apologizes and then notices his compass tattoo on his wrist. She watches in disbelief as he moves through the crowd. When Jane sees him reach for the gun tucked in his waistband she screams for Henry. Annie uses her press badge to get in to the party. She is determined to stop this murder. Henry looks up when he hears Jane, sees the gun and shoves the commissioner to the floor. Shots are fired and when things calm down Kandinsky is in custody. Henry and Pike are unharmed. There is one fatality. Annie is lying dead on the floor. Somehow, amidst it all she got hit with the shot. Cells phones start going off like crazy and the headlines are everywhere that Pike is associated with the mob and a crook. He is finished.
When they arrive back at the Drake the two couples meet in front of the elevator together. Olivia tells the boys to go up first. Henry tells Gavin that he’s sorry. Gavin has been right this whole time and from now on Henry puts his trust in Gavin. Olivia compliments Jane on finding the thief. Jane says that the stuff just showed up. Olivia’s not buying that but she says that if Jane is protecting someone it must be for a good reason. Jane goes to see Nona and thank her for saving Henry’s life. Nona says she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Jane tells Nona that if she ever needs anything she can come to her. Nona is talking with her unresponsive grandmother later. She thinks that maybe she can trust Jane and maybe she can even help her grandma.
Olivia and Gavin are having a drink before bed. When discussing Henry, Gavin said everyone’s allowed to make one mistake. Just one. Henry you better be on your toes. Olivia says that she forgets sometimes that Gavin can do magic. Gavin says that Olivia is his lucky charm. They are actually very sweet together. You can tell Gavin cares for Olivia a great deal.
Nona hangs the necklace she said she didn’t have on Jane’s doorknob. A man appears out of the dark mist. Who is this man? We know the ghost girl thinks he is evil. I can’t wait to find out who put him in that suitcase and why. If it was Gavin, is it possible this thing is even more evil than he?
